Somehow, the system thinks my name is ****.comcast.net. It doesn't use the name; my real user name is tcebo, and that's the name of my directory in C:\users. But the sign-in page displays it. Perhaps there is something in the registry that has gone uncorrected?

That would be normal for it show the email address of a Microsoft account like this.
It will show what you have set as the name for your Microsoft account online below on the sign in screen.

Damn, Brink -- I edited out one name and completely missed the second. My apologies.
Now that I understand it's an alias and not a false account name I will live with it. I did look at your references.
