As a test, also make sure you have turned off require sign-in on wakeup since the methods above are only for at startup.

I think I have found an underlying problem.

When I registered this OS after receiving the PC, I made a mistake in entering my email address and didn't notice it

I need to correct that. How can I ?

If you wanted to switch back to using a local account (without email address), you can use the tutorial below to do so.

Switch to Local Account in Windows 10

Otherwise, you should be able to just start over with netplwiz in option 1 below to update it for the account and password.

Thank you for your patience Brink .

I'm not making any progress. I'm forever going round in circles.

How can I start from scratch, however inconvenient it may be?

Please provide more details about what are you going in circles with. Maybe we can help with it.

For now, I would undo what you currently have done in the registry and start over with netplwiz being sure to select the correct account and enter its password correctly.

I keep coming up against the necessity to enter my Microsoft user name and password..

I think I mentioned before, my user name was intended to be my email address but I spelt it wrongly. That's the present problem.
Microsoft sends - tries to send - messages to the corrupted email address.

When I go to netplwiz I get this, and can't click on the lower user.

And this is what the relevant registry entry looks like now

You could sign in to the built-in "Administrator" account, delete the Microsoft account you created with the wrong email address, create a new Microsoft account with the correct email address, make it an administrator account, and should be good to go.

I don't believe this ... I've looked around the control panel and haven't yet found out where/how I can create another Microsoft, or any other account.

Oh, what is the difference between a Microsoft password and a Windows password?

    Thank you again Brink

This must be getting rather tedious for you. I'm afraid that my short term memory is getting worse by the day. Very annoying.
