    Forgotten admin password.

I've forgotten the administrator password for my notebook. I can login with a 4 digit pin but I need the current password to change the password and that's the one I've forgotten. Also Windows keeps complaining of needing a startup repair but I cannot run it without the admin pass. What can I do?

    Hello @Kol12,

In addition to reset your password: Reset Password of User Account in Windows 10

If needed, you can enable the built-in Administrator account from a command prompt at boot using option 5 below to use.

Thanks Cliff and Brink. I'm gonna see if I can sort this out on the notebook tonight. Can't recall whether I set up a MS or local account but will find out soon enough.

And when you have finished sorting this problem out, make sure you write your password down somewhere secure yet readily available to you. Writing down user account passwords is as effective as & is a lot cheaper than making 'Password reset disks' [which are only for local accounts anyway]. I always write user account passwords down on a piece of paper that I keep inside one of those dog nametag cylinder things attached to my main keyring -

Here's a [UK] link for ID tags as an example https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Barrel-.../dp/B00DEB1JVQ There are lots of available choices but I bought ones that, like these, have a slot in the bottom for me to swing off so I can be confident they won't come apart accidentally while I'm out & about.

@Brink With Netplwiz I can't click "Reset Password" for the admin user name (Group - Administrators). Is that normal? That's the user I need to reset the password!

Hey Kol12, he's off shift now(it's 3:30 in the morning where he lives) so you might have to wait until morning your time zone to get an answer.

1 Which account are you currently signed in to?
2 Is the checkbox near the top of the NetPlWiz dialog box set for users must enter a username & password …?
3 Which account in the list do you have selected?
4 Is the selected account a local one or an MSAccount?
5 What does the text say just above the Reset password button?
6 Is the Reset password button greyed out & inoperative or is there something else stopping you from clicking on it?

Looks like I need to create a password reset disk to use option 4 here: Reset Password of User Account in Windows 10
