    Forgotten Password!!

    Hello folks!!

It has been a while since I have been here. My days of providing advice are over, since a couple of strokes took care of them. This time would like to be at the recipient end, and ask for some help from the Windows10 team I consider the best.

Have a person (82 yrs old) who does not remember the password than needs to be entered at the lock screen on the laptop (Lenovo Ideapad 320). Needless to say she can go nowhere in the computer.

Thought about the Password Reset Disk, and decided to give it a try. However, at Step 7, the current user account password is needed. This person does not have a clue what it is. If this info is left blank, a wrong password prompt appears.

I am trying to figure out what to do to help the individual, but it has turned out into a guessing game.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello CB,

Depending on if this is for a local account or Microsoft account, you might see if you may be able to use an option in the tutorial below to reset the password.

    Thanks Brink!!

    Much appreciated.

Tried the Microsoft Account route last night, and struck out. Will try Option 5 and see how it goes.

Have no clue whether it is a Microsoft Account or a local account. How can one tell whe you cannot get into the laptop at all?

Another tip: jot down that password so you can't forget it anymore. But keep the note in a safe place ánd do 2FA to be sure!

    CB,

You may be able to use Option 5 in the tutorial below to enable the built-in Administrator in a command prompt at boot.

Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10 | Tutorials

This way, you may be able to at least sign in to the computer with the "Administrator" account above to determine it the owner's account is a local account or Microsoft account to better know how to reset their password.

    Thanks, Brink.

Got to Recovery > See Advanced Repair Options

Got Choose an option > Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Command Prompt

Tells me to select an account, and enter its password....

If I were to do a clean install of Windows 10, would it solve the problem?
Realize programs installed by user will be lost.

You'll have to boot from a USB for the command prompt at boot instead to avoid the requirement to enter a password.

    Thanks for the reply, Brink!

Presuming you mean boot from a USB that contains Windows 10. Is that correct?

Correct. A Windows installation USB would be good.
