A friend died, and his mother is asking my wife to gain access into his laptop. We think it would be running Win 10. It was new in late, 2016.
Do I work with Microsoft directly on this, or can you advise?

We have this tutorial about turning on built in administrator. Option 5
Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10
You could also copy out the data with this recovery disk
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk
and then clean install Windows.

If you want access to this person's mail and assuming they were staying signed in I would use first option. If this person was up on security and turned on encryption you may not be able to re-enter. If you use second option and can see files you know encryption is likely not on.
Might help if we knew what she wanted access to. If it is use of machine then clean install. Just data then recovery disk.
