Logging in with PIN...Seems password is not what I thought I set it to

I can't imagine how I did this. My PC had some repair, and HP sent it back with a user of HP. I cahnged it to my name, and set up my old password (I thought...don't know how I got it wrong when I had to verify it). But I also set up a PIN, and it has been having me login with that.

I'm trying to access the computer from another, and am unsuccessful.

So, I went to change the password just to see if that helps, and it tells me my password is wrong when I enter the current password in order to change it.

I have no idea how to get out of this mess.

    Any suggestions?

    BTW...I just tried: net user <username> <password>

It says it can't find the user name. So I guess changing the name of the user, which it does show my name, not HP, when I go to control panel and manage users...didn't work correctly.

Still not sure how to rectify.

Oh, another thing I noticed, there is no user with my name in the users directory on C:\users. Only HP.

You need to start by creating a new local user with the user name and password that you want:
Add Local Account or Microsoft Account in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Make sure to change it to an Administrator account:
Change Account Type in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Then once you copy all your user data files from the old "HP" account to your proper user account, you can delete the "HP" account. Once the "HP" account is deleted and any Microsoft Account logins associated with it, then you can convert your new local user account to a Microsoft Account if you want:
Switch to Microsoft Account in Windows 10 | Tutorials

All you did previously was change the login credentials for the "HP" account. You did not actually change the underlying profile name of "HP". To do that you need to take additional steps:
Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10 | Tutorials

I do not recommend that process though, and since you are stuck without knowing the password, that problem would continue to exist anyway.

Thank so much for taking the time to reply.
Starting down the path you suggested, I have come across some interesting things.
First, when I try to create the other user with my first name, it won't let me because i had changed the hp user to my first name. Now, I can't find anywhere that I can change that name again so that I can create them new user with that name.
I discovered, to my surprise, that the one current user seemed to maybe by my Microsoft account, as it had my email address associated. But maybe not. I tried logging in using my Microsoft password...didn't work. Then I discovered it was set to 'Do not allow login', or something to that effect. I turned that off. Still couldn't login.
So I changed my Microsoft account password. Still can't login. But it sure seems to be logged in via my Microsoft account, as when I click on Manage my Microsoft account, it takes me there and logs me in.

Seems the ultimate way to resolve would be to change the name of the current account back to HP, and then follow your instructions. But I can't seem to find the way to change the existing user name now.

Try Windows + R key to open run box. Then run netplwiz

Click on properties for the user account. Also try adding the new account there. Just don't forget to make your new account administrator!

As an alternative, create a temp local account as administrator, named something like tempadmin. After you copy all data files to it, then delete the first user account. Restart the computer. Then create the new account with the proper name you want. Once you get it going, you can delete the tempadmin account.

Whatever you do, though, since you don't know the password to the only administrator account on the computer, it is very important to get another administrator account going on the computer that you do know the password to!
