I cannot get my Windows 10 email address changed.

I am having one heck of a time trying to change my ‘OLD’
email address registered to MS Windows 10 changed. When I follow the instructions to
change my email address, I get a response that something is wrong! It doesn’t tell me what is
wrong but to reenter the information. I have done this a couple of times with
    no success.
I have Office 365 and I have no problems with getting into
the admin center with my new e-mail. It was easy to work with them to make the
change. My old email provider just canceled all the accounts with two months’
notice and I have no contact with them. You can imagine what a headache that
was! My new email provider is through Office 365 and although it costs a few
bucks a year, I am very happy with the service and my own domain.
    Any suggestions?
    John

You mention that your new email address is through O365 using your own domain. That means that the email is not a so called Microsoft Account, instead it is an Azure Active Directory (AD) account. Azure AD accounts are also called "Work or School" accounts, meaning they belong to an organization. In your case the organization is your own domain.

If you are currently using your old Microsoft account to sign in to Windows, you need first switch your Windows user account to a local account. See tutorial: Switch to Local Account in Windows 10 | Tutorials

Because the Azure AD is not and has nothing to do with Microsoft account, you can not use it as such. Trying to switch from a local account to a Microsoft account naturally fails if you try to use your Azure AD account, Microsoft servers do not recognize it as a Microsoft account.

Instead, in case you need / want to use your john@john'sdomain.com email address as Windows sign-in account, you need to join your PC to Azure AD:

That is a great suggestion except that it does not recognize my password that I think I used. I will try some variations that I think I used but not sure... it is late and I will try tomorrow.
    Thanks

Well, I think I figured it out. I used my Gmail account and it told me to wait 30 days for the creds to be applied. I can see my new email account on the sign in for MS. So we will see what happens.
Kari after reading your instructions a couple of times+ I under the change procedure (maybe)
    Thanks for your help.
