run netplwiz, near the top remove the check from the box Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer. Click apply. On the diaglog box that appears, just click OK. Then put the check back in the box for user name and password and click OK. Restart the computer.

This circumstance Post Windows 7 Upgrade to 10.

I've recently a Dell Inspiron One 2320. This duplication of accounts occurs with the primary account and the built-in Administrator Account is also duplicated. The first account with my name "Jim Farrell" has a circle the other has a square for a background. I can't find the program that would invoke a system restore to correct this from Windows 7. I'd be willing to risk a registry modification to rid myself of these duplicating accounts.

duplicate login icons on Welcome screen

I am curious if this issue was ever resolved. I now have the same issue with the current version of Windows 10....two User icons, one with a square and one with a circle. This PC was upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 over a year ago, and the issue just recently emerged. I too have tried all the suggested solutions stated above, with no help. Any ideas appreciated. Thanks.

    Ron,

    Please would you be specific?

1 Please confirm that you are not trying to use netwplwiz to log in the [normally disabled] BuiltIn Admin account.

2.1 Have you gone to netplwiz, set the checkbox for [all] users must enter a username & password then rebooted?
Sign in User Account Automatically - TenForumsTutorials
    - note the possible need to also go to Enable or Disable Passwordless Sign-in - TenForumsTutorials

2.2 If this works then you should be able to set netplwiz up again to automatically log in a chosen user account.

Sorry for not being more clear. I do use a password to log in to Windows, and would like to continue that. I only have one User account on the system, and it has worked A-OK since I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about a year ago. The issue that began a few weeks back shows two User accounts (my account duplicated) but only on the Windows login screen. One is in the shape of a circle (which I believe is my original) and the other is in the shape of a square. I can log in from either one with my password, so the issue is not disabling, just curious why it is there and how I can remove it. I did try disabling and enabling user password requirement with netplwiz, but it made no difference.

I also notice when I log in with the circle shaped icon, the Welcome screen looks like the Windows 10 welcome screen I am used to. When I log in with the square shaped icon, the Welcome screen looks more like the old Windows 7 welcome screen....however, they both open my one User account in Windows 10.

    Ron,

The normal reason for this symptom is that netplwiz has been used [incorrectly] so I suggest you refer to the tutorial to make sure that checkbox is set - i.e. that all accounts are being told to log in manually.

If the checkbox is set then your problem is not one I've seen before.

OK, Denis....thanks. I will keep searching. This issue seems to be a recurring one, based on old blogs I've read, and I'm betting it is related to a recent Windows 10 update. I appreciate your replies.

Another reported cause is changing the computer name.
