    Take Ownership folders and files

Since I got the update for Windows 10 for 1809 version I need to take ownership for many folders and files I want to use.

I could some help for this. I know there used to be some software that would do this for you. Does anyone know what software that would be and where to get it.

I looked up how to get permissions and ownership in Google search and the instructions made no since to me.

The first thing I wanted to do was add some images to Windows/Web/Wallpaper and it would not allow me to do this because I do not have permission as the folder is read only. How do I change that so it is NOT read only. For some reason and I am not sure why I can NOT take screenshot using Paintshop Pro 7 to show you what I mean. That is weird also, it had been working fine. Other place the screenshot works fine.

I am assuming that if I have ownership of the folder it will NOT be read only?

    help please, thank you

If it's just read only you only need to right click on the folder select properties untuck read only. The take ownership file is on our forum but trying to take ownership of folders protected by system can brick the pc

Pretty much all Folders show as read only, this is normal. That is not your problem. You need to give Administrators(Desktop\Administrators) write access (Full control) to the Wallpaper and other folders you want to mess with. As Samurai said, you really don't want to take ownership of system folders.

You can do this by right clicking on the folder and selecting Properties, then the Security tab.

As Samuria says, taking ownership of System folders is generally not a good idea. The question is why do you even think you need to do this? The web\wallpaper folder holds the default images you can choose as your desktop wallpaper, but you don't have to put an image there to be able to use it as your wallpaper. You can choose an image from any folder. That's what the Browse button is for in Settings > Personalization > Background.

Are you saying you can't save a screenshot with PSP7 ? If so, then that is not likely to be an ownership problem. The upgrade to 1809 has probably turned on Defender Controlled Folder Access. This will block PSP7 from saving to any controlled folder such as your Pictures folder. To be able to save files with PSP7 when this ransomware protection is turned on you need to add 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Jasc Software Inc\Paint Shop Pro 7\psp.exe' as an allowed app.

I have PSP7 too. I have just taken a screenshot using it and saved it successfully in Windows 10 version 1809.

Ownership and permissions are two different things. Once you take ownership, you can change permissions.

Have of to say about the responses to my posat.

Samuria I did as you said and right-clicked the folder and removed the tick from "read only box" in porperties and it still goes right back to "read only"

Ztruker - I really have no idea what you are trying to tell me

Bree I am not sure what you are trying to tell me.

After hours of searching I finally found the software called "Take Ownership". I know it worked years ago in windows 7. I have NOT tried it yet on windows 10. I am going to follow the instructions I found by searching the internet and hope I can show where I was getting hung up on the process of taking ownership.

    Thanks

Here goes: I installed Take Ownership which changes something in registry. It sort of works because now when I right click on something, one of the options is "Take Ownership"

So now I tried to get rid of the "read-only". I went to the folder and right clicked and then selected properties. This then shows after removing the option "read-only".
    Take Ownership folders and files-properties-1.jpg
I then clicked the apply button and this came up:
    Take Ownership folders and files-properties-2.jpg

    this came up:
    Take Ownership folders and files-properties-3.jpg

now I clicked "Continue" and it goes back to the Property option for the folder. The "read-only" is now has nothing in it.
    Take Ownership folders and files-properties-4.jpg

So now went back and tried to put an image in the folder. Crap Crap and more Crap. Back to saying it is a read-only folder.

I am at a loss now. I have no idea where to go from here.

As I said before, all folders are Read Only. It has nothing to do with your problem. You don't have permission to write to that folder.

Now that you are the owner, you should be able to use the icacls command from a Elevated Command Prompt.

    Code:
      C:\>icacls "C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper" /grant Administrators:(OI)(CI)F /T

      According do MS documentation:

    • F = Full Control
    • CI = Container Inherit - This flag indicates that subordinate containers will inherit this ACE.
    • OI = Object Inherit - This flag indicates that subordinate files will inherit the ACE.
    • /T = Apply recursively to existing files and sub-folders. (OI and CI only apply to new files and sub-folders). Credit: comment by @AlexSpence.
For complete documentation, you may run "icacls" with no arguments or see the Microsoft documentation here and here
    Above found at StackOverflow here.

I finally found how to set any image on the PC as a background. Now if I don't like that image how do I get rid of it so that it does NOT show when I go to personalize?
