Depends on the policy set up but PIN certainly don't have to be just numeric. They can be punctuation, letters or a mixture.

Your problem may have been wrong keyboard layout was defaulted or num-lock was on. I often get PIN wrong as French keyboard you press shift + 1 to get a number one and on English you just press 1.

I have just this minute got 18298 update installed and it asked me for my PIN. As usual, I typed in four letters and one digit successfully.
The pc which had the PIN troubles works with a numeric pin. I am reluctant to try changing it's PIN to the format of the rest of my pc's for fear of messing it up.

Hi folks
as my background is engineering - I believe in the engineer's golden rule : "If it ain't broke -- don't fix it" !!!! pity Ms doesn't often follow that simple rule with Windows !!!

However if you still want to change the pin number - why don't you backup the system first -- use Free Macrium or similar, then change pin number -- if it doesn't work or you get locked out of the system simply restore the previous image. Note - ensure you create the bootable restore program from Macrium or whatever backup product you are using - Macrium gets very good ratings on this forum BTW and for what you need it's 100% free.
