User Accounts

I have a problem with sign in/user accounts. The sign in screen shows incorrect password.

Then two accounts show in the left hand of the screen with two accounts with the same name. If I move to select the un-hilighted one it asks for a pin and then I can get into the laptop.

C:users shows 4 accounts thus:

Default
Default.migrated
John
Public

If I run - netplwiz the user accounts shows only one - the admin account - no others

Similarly in Settings - users - one accounts (administrator) is shown.

Is it safe to delete the John account which I think is the culprit for duplicate accounts at log in?

What is the Default.migrated account

I am the only user (and administrator) of the laptop. I want it to sign in automatically when I switch on i.e. no password input required.

Win 10 pro Asus laptop.

No, C:\Users contains four folders, but that doesn't mean they are all accounts.

Default is a template used to create a new profile for any new user accounts you add. DO NOT TOUCH IT!
Default.migrated is an old version of Default from a previous version of Windows, left there after an upgrade.
Public is what it says it is - a public folder that all users have permission to use. When there are many accounts on a PC is is a place they can put documents, photos, etc. so that all can see and use them.
John is the only folder that has an account to go with it.

NO! That is your user profile folder. If you managed to delete it not only would you not be able to log in, but all your documents would be lost - that's where they are stored.

Not sure which method (tried several to no avail) now but it's working (sort of) fine now. I think the John password was incorrect, so put in the original (in netplwiz)

It now boots up showing John, then changes after a few seconds to my Admin account (without intervention by me) Bizarre I tried to change the John account to the admin password and then it went back to my original issue. When I press start - menu - it only ever shows one account - the admin account - not John.

do you think if i created a brand new account and gave it full admin rights it would sort it all out?

It sounds like you may have incorrectly entered your account's password in netplwiz causing the "incorrect password" message on the sign-in screen.

If this is the case, then you can just setup netplwiz again using the correct password this round to fix it.

Administrator. I have only ever set up one account. The only change I can recall was in 10 pro asked for a pin (for ease of future access/security!!). that seems to have triggered/corrupted something bizarre.

Do you think if I create brand new user with admin rights I can simply use that and ignore the other fiasco?

Think i will leave it for now as it is working (sort of), firing up, eventually to the area it used to fire up to.

I might consider re-installing Win 10, but frankly I will probably eventually go back to Apple Mac. Windows/Microsoft are not with the real world of what ordinary users want. They seem to be constantly tweaking it and then something else goes wrong. I had wireless issues, mouse issues which both worked fine before "updates". Now this multi user effect, which incidentally came directly after an update. It is dreadful. No wonder they are free.
