Cannot create a new user (The User Profile Service failed the logon) ?

I have a Dell laptop that seems to work fine.
I did a hard drive check and seems OK.

I created a new user in the control panel / users in the normal way.
Went through all the security questions etc etc - and everything seemed to go fine.
Great... so I rebooted and tried to login as the new user.

It gave me an error , "The User Profile Service failed the logon."

When I look on the C drive in the Users dir, there is no user being created.
In Regedit, there is no new user in the place where it should be. Why?

The creation process went well and it was OK.
I even tried creating the user again, - same issue.
Any ideas?

Hi, suggests either a problem with permissions - perhaps registry permissions- or maybe the equivalent of a group policy setting prohibiting the creation of a user. However, if the latter applied I might expect an appropriate message.

There are some posts with this error message on this forum - have you tried searching the forum for the error message?
There are quite a few results- you may find something to help.

This fix is for Windows 7 - if you can find the equivalent for Windows 10...

Otherwise:
if you know this is a problem which has occurred recently you could try
- restoring a disk image created prior to the problem (you do use disk imaging, do you? So often recommended here - e,g. Macrium Reflect (free).
- using a Restore point

However I'm going to guess you don't know when this started-quite reasonable as creating users is not a frequent activity.

You could try:
Tweaking,com's free repair tool. (Easy to find)
Try only repairs 1,2,3 (permissions).

I would recommend you create a disk image first.

Otherwise you may need to do an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs, data and most settings.

I put together a summary of existing advice for this fault in my 7th September 2017 post within an MSA forum thread.

As mentioned in that summary, you might find that copying the hidden C:\Users\Default folder from another computer fixes things.

Thanks all..... I have another win10 computer, a desktop. I looked at the c:\users\default user folder.
Its way bigger than the laptop one (laptop is the one having the issue).
I am a bit wary of copying that whole fodler across to my laptop because it will probably contain a whole load of stuff not applicable to my laptop.

I checked the permissions on the c:\users folder, and they are all good - all full control.
I might try the default user folder copy if other smaller solutions don't work...

Smaller solutions? Hmm, I think this is the small solution.

Here's what I have for that folder:

You have the other option I mentioned: an in-place upgrade repair install which keeps all programs, data and most settings. Note the iso used must be the same build and base language as the installed OS.

If you use disk imaging (as most here consider users should) you and create a disk image, try the solution, and if it doesn't work you have the disk image to fall back on if necessary.

Thus I believe we have given you two possible ways forward.
