    Help: Password Not Recognized!!!

Windows lock screen changed: password window shrank and the pin option disappeared. It will not accept my password!

System: Dell Optiplex 745 5G, 250G Windows Insider fast lane, fresh udate. Booting to Safe Mode to solve another problem, it rejected my password. Can not get back into Windows from lock screen!

Background: last week, BSOD when the desktop manifested. System would not reboot.

Reset left me with no mouse or keyboard. No other options were available. {No restore points and it could not find my backup.} All else failed.

Fresh reinstall, recovery from backup file, reinstallation of software and update followed.

Residual problems: DVDRW not recognized, spins, in BIOS, not showing in Device Manager.

Bios demands striking F1 to boot, claiming floppy disk error. There is no FD in this system and never was. FD shows in Device Manager, reappers after uninstall.

Hardware troubleshooter did not help. Nothing in ASC11 and Tweaking.com Windows Repair helped.

Attempts to reflash the bios failed, declaring disk access error, both in Windows and on boot up. I removed the usb stick and rebooted. When I tried to reboot to Safe Mode, a message flashed by too fast to read, related to bios reflash. Subsequent reflash of Phoenix 2.6.6 did not help.

when the lock screen manifested, the password field was smaller and it rejected my password. It does the same in Windows.

I set up this Optiplex 760 with the same password. It works here, not on the 745. I do not know my Microsoft Account password. It made me change the pw. when I reinstalled Windows. I saved it in an html file I can't accesss. There is no way to use my pin. I do not know what the key icon is.

The I forgot my password link just pauses brifly, goes dark and refreshes the lock screen.

Hardware: no FD, DVD is not recognized. Only 2 SATA headers, one for HD and one for DVD. No touch screen.

    Hi Ben Powell.

Wow lots of issues. Not sure where to start. I've seen on threads here where when someone changes MS passwords the safe mode password remains the older one. Not sure where you are with passwords.

So on your 760. Are you using a Microsoft account or a local account to sign in? We don't want to mess this device up.

On your 745 can you boot to your BIOS. I think it is F2 to enter setup on Dell. If you can boot to setup please reload defaults and check you boot order. Want HDD first.

On your 745 is there personal data that needs to be recovered?

What media are you reloading Windows with?

I am using the 745, I can only boot from the internal HD or USB Stick, DVD ain't recognized. I put the same account and PW on both boxes, but this ohe nas changed. Neither one will authenticate Windows. I got lucky and found my new MS password on a scratch pad.

BIOS does not have provisions for resetting to default. Boot priority is indifferent, it always tries phantom FD first. I took it out of the lineup, no change! I reflashed the BIOS. SFC & DISM did not find errors.

I use the local acct. on the 760. The 745 now needs the MS acct to enter Safe Mode. It will not let me change the local acct. PW.

All options in the authentication dialog fail, including troubleshooting and changed hdwe.

Everything not in my external HD is gone with the wind. Alarms and clock app. fails, will not start a timer. Now Nightly will not accept any form input. I had to use FireFox for this. FixWin 10 will not start. Windows Update will not start.

Wish every supplier would post manuals for BIOS.

If you need to reset BIOS to defaults you will have to remove coin battery on motherboard very carefully. Usually there is a reset in the Bios.

Here is how they say to do it.

    https://www.dell.com/support/article...roduct?lang=en

Does your BIOS look like the one in this video.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLzHMiMf80Q

The boot order should be under System.

If you tap on F12 as machine starts up, instead of F2 does CD show in list.

So there is data on your HDD you need to recover or was it deleted? (as part of an upgrade process to say 1809)

All lost that was not in ext HD. BIOS Bat. was at 2.7v, so I replaced it. That accelerated the boot considerably. Other problems persisted. I leave for a meeting in a coupla minutes, will check your links when I return., Thanks!!

This system was built prior to '15 si it is not eligible for resetting. The bios version used in the video is older than mine but very similar. Removing the FD from the boot sequence and disabling it had no effect.

Ben you seem to be repeating your posts.

Please answer, is there data on drive that has to be recovered.

All BIOS have a reset or you remove coin battery.

Does you DVD show when you press F12 at boot.

Caledccon, there is nothing left to recover. The DVDRW was in the boot sequence list. It was not in file explorer or disk mgt. I removed it and the phantom floppy from ther boot list, without benefit. At present, Settings and my start menu aps will not run.

It won't be in Disk mgmt unless disk installed.

There have been reports of DVD not showing in file manager. Put that aside.

So you can boot the 745 and Windows comes up. Are you on V1803?
