How do I change my user name (Home Edition)?

Been Googling this half the afternoon - still can't do it! I haven't used Windows 10 before today, when I got a new laptop delivered, so am a real beginner. Though, that said, quite a bit of it is close enough to Windows 7 (which all my other computers run) that it's not as opaque as I'd feared..

However, I can't work out how to change my user name. I entered my email address at some prompt at first run, and my user name is now Marti instead of Martin. There is a folder called 'Marti' in the User folder. I'd really rather add the 'n'...

I read that going into user accounts, there is an option to change the user name, but that is missing in my user accounts window

Suffice it to say that nothing I have found works, or is applicable to the Home Edition. I have ended up going into a Microsoft account management page, but I am asked to log in to a Microsoft account (do I have one?? Not as far as I am aware). Surely there must be some way I can do this without signing up for a Microsoft account (no idea what the account does anyway).

So how do I get my name right? Why does such a simple thing have to be so complex? I have wasted well over an hour already...

    Thanks for any help,

    Martin

    Hello Martin,

It sounds like you want to change the name of your user profile folder instead. When adding a Microsoft account, its user profile folder only uses the first 5 characters of the account name.

If so, the tutorial below will help safely show you how to.

Looks like that is exactly what I need - will try it tomorrow. Many thanks!

Actually, just tried it - I see I have to boot into Safe Mode to be able to change the user name? I may have managed that, but now instead of getting a screen asking for my PIN, I get my full name and a box for a password. I have no idea what password it is asking for. Nothing I try works. I am sure I only entered a PIN at the setup stage today... I haven't been able to get past this screen. :-(

Did you sign out of the account you wanted to change the user profile folder name for? That account cannot be signed into when doing this without causing an issue.

Enable and sign in to the built-in Administrator account, and double check all the registry settings to make sure they are correct for the new name of your account's profile folder.

Brink - many thanks for the replies. Yes, that seems to have worked fine - the folder is now called Martin and programmes that rely on the folder (like Outlook) are finding data there with no problem.

These forums have been my first port of call for stuff like this since Windows XP came out, and clearly that it going to continue now I have a PC running Win10!

... er, sorry, I mean Martin
