    Logon password issue

I have windows 10 pro on my pc, it is not on a domain, and logon password is done via the PC its self, The login is not connected to a Microsoft account. There is only one login account on the PC.

The problem is this, I reboot my PC, the login window comes up, I login no problem.

If I reboot the PC and then leave it leave it and come back to it later, say a couple of hours (I have not worked out exactly what the time scale is), enter the users password and it will reject the password, I have tried to login many times. I have to reboot the PC again and then once rebooted I can then login and the password is accepted.

I have tried changing the password but that made no difference, it is almost as thought once it has rebooted the PC and left it standing for a while, something goes to sleep and the only way to wake it is to reboot the PC.

    Anybody have any ideas?

    Hi xendistar

Once the PC has gone to sleep, you then wake and to get the password box you click a key. Is the right language showing in the lower right?

You then key in your password but before hitting enter can you click on the little symbol to the right of the password. Not the arrow, the eye with the long eye brow over it.

When you click and hold your password should appear, is your password keyed properly?

I wonder if language or keyboard is changing when it sleeps.

Are you all up to date on updates, that is 17134.285? Windows key +R, type winver, enter.

The PC does not go to sleep (or suspend), it is just set to turn the monitor off after an hour. I will log off the PC tonight and then check your suggestions when I try to login in tomorrow morning. The current version of Windows is 1803 (OS build 17134.285), language is currently set to English (United Kingdom).

Well I forgot to reboot the PC last night so I did it this morning at 9am, just tried logging in now (3pm) and it has gone straight in. I have rebooted it again so will try again tomorrow either early tomorrow morning or evening.

We each run our device differently but can I ask why you do these reboots.

The only time I restart is when something breaks, like this morning, no sound, or Windows forces a restart.

I'm separating restarts from power on events and the Window processes for each are different. Power on, unless you have disabled, uses Windows Fast Startup so you really aren't getting a new fresh copy of Windows. A restart on the other hand is a fresh copy.

That said both restart apps that were running. I wonder if an app is restarting incorrectly and the wait, between boot and entering password, causes something to corrupt.

I only restart my PC either when it starts acting up, (my PC runs 24\7, so after several days dependent on usage it will need to be rebooted) or when updates has been installed and a restart is required. As this PC is not my main PC it can be several days between usage so it can be sat at the login screen for a while. The last time this PC had a power off restart was probably when we had a power outage several months ago.

I only rebooted it earlier to put the PC into the normal scenario where it is left on the login screen and when I try to login the password is rejected, as I said in my first post, if I reboot now I can log straight back in with out an issue, but leaving the PC on the login screen for a length of time (that time is not currently unknown but after this morning it seems as though it is longer than 6 hours), it will not accept the password and I will have to reboot then I can log back in again.

I don't how or why but since writing the first post in this thread, my PC has not rejected my password once, I have spent many attempts leaving the PC sat on the login page and then everytime I try to login, in it goes as it should with no issue. I don't know if it is an update the PC has received or what but it is acting as it should and not rejecting the password as I dicussed.

I will mark the thread as resolved even if I don't know how.

    Cool. Glad it's sorted.

It's like when you take your car in and the mechanic says it didn't do it for me. You drive three blocks and boom.
