Lost Admin User status on Win 10 Home

    Hi,
saw a couple of my allow app change boxes only have the NO box in them. Checked and I only have Standard User rights which won't allow me to enter YES. Not sure how this came about but wonder if anyone can show me the way to get back to Admin User.

    Thx

    Welcome to TenForums @Retlaw

The UAC box with only 'NO' is a sign that there are no available administrator accounts on this PC. One way this can happen is if you used the Control Panel to change your account from an administrator to a standard user, thinking that it will make browsing 'safer'. You should have made sure you created at least one other local administrator account before doing that.

There are several ways to recover from this. One would be to enable the built-in Administrator account, sign in as Administrator and promote your account back to an administrator again. Or, better yet, create a new local administrator account so you can use that in this and future 'emergencies'. Enabling the built-in Administrator can be tricky if you have no other administrator accounts. Option Five here is about the only way, but it's complicated...

Perhaps the easier recovery method is that described by @Try3 here...

Sorry about that @Retlaw, I'd forgotten that it's a tutorial submission in a restricted area. Try3 originally posted it here where all can read it.

    Retlaw,

If you have any queries along the way then you can post them here & I'll help as much as I can.

We are not in the same timezone. I'll be around for another 5 hours today and then from early tomorrow [from about 0300 in your timezone].

Thx for the help. Finally tried out the instructions in Safe Mode. Got down to instruction 4.2.2.6 okay, but then got the message more help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3506. Did this and This option is unknown. Things were going well upto then.

    Tony,

Responses of that nature are usually the result of typos in the command entered. Perhaps you omitted a space somewhere, didn't use the plural of Administrators or mistyped whatever name you used for the suggested NewAdminPrimary.

    Code:
    net localgroup Administrators NewAdminPrimary /add

    Tony,

You might also want to check that your NewAdminPrimary [or whichever name you used] has been created okay by entering
    Code:
    net user
and you could check its Admin status ["Local group memberships"] by entering
    Code:
    net user NewAdminPrimary

    Hi Denis,
thx for the help. Got through everything but with no success. Seems I will need to do a Clean Installation, which will be a lot of fun.

Wait for a day @Retlaw, it's late here in the UK. But tomorrow @Try3 may be back with some more suggestions for you to try before a clean install.
