    Ok, that's worked. The taskbar characters are now white again, but the icon names have acquired the nasty shadows.

    Hmm, you might see if toggling "Combine taskbar buttons" to "Always, hide label" and back to what you had set (ex: "Never") to see if that may sort the text.

    That affects only the taskbar, not the desktop icons.

    I've unchecked the relevant box in advanced system settings, but it has no effect.


    Addendum:

    Google coughs up the same remedy on many sites. One of them also said restart after unchecking that item in advanced system settings.

    That's solved it.

    Does refreshing (F5) the desktop help?

    If not, then see if having "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" on or off may help.
