Small UAC problem.

Afternoon all.. particularly try 3 ?.

A little while ago I set up a NewAdminPrimary account the password for which has been opening downloads fine....BUT now I am getting the message that the password has expired and must be changed !.. If I remember rightly it was a temporary password which I selected at the time.

Now I get a drop box asking for a new password but whatever I enter I get the message ' the passwords you entered did not match '.

I would again value some guidance to help me firstly to ' learn HOW TO once again '
and secondly reset the password perhaps more permanently this time so that business can be resumed !.

Hello Alan,

If you're able to sign in to an administrator account on the computer, you could disable password expiration for your account.

Alan,

Brink knows a lot more than I do about this so use that link to the tutorial.
- I have never had a password expire.
- I have never even thought about the issue.
- I do not know how your password had an expiry date set on it in the first place.

I do remember that you started out with a simple password just to get going and then changed it to a decent one once your new account[s] had been created.
- Nothing in the procedure you used should have triggered an expiry date being set.
- As far as the system should have been concerned, you had a permanent password and you then merely decided to change it to another permanent password.

When you have resolved the immediate problem, I suggest you work your way through the other user accounts you have created to check if they have expiry dates set. So just enter this command for each of the user account names [I have used Alan just as an example]
net user alan
and look at the line beginning Password expires.

Hello Brink,

The only administrator account I have is my NewAdminPrimary which is the one where the password has expired !.

I have run the cmd solution...1. finding that NewAdminPrimary is my only administrator account.. 2. That PasswordExpires = TRUE.. and 3. That entering the wmic User account command using NewAdminPrimary as the user name fails to come up with nothing more than ERROR Generic failure !.

I guess that I am again making wrong moves ?..can you suggest a remedy please ?

In that case, you might see if you may be able to enable the built-in "Administrator" account in a command prompt at boot using the method in Option 5 below.

Once enabled, sign in to the account and disable password expiration for your account.

Hello again Brink !

For curiosity I am attaching a screenshot of my welcome screen ... this is what I see when responding to ' change password '...a box asking for a new password to be entered... unfortunately when I enter a new password all I get is another box ..
' password don't match '.

Is all this of any relevance ?... just wondering!.

Still trying to unravel the intricacies of using cmd to advantage !.

That doesn't look a password expiration screen for a local account.

Usually, you will see what's in the example screenshots below. Normally, you would have a top box to enter the current password, and the next to enter the new password once and twice to confirm.

What does the fields in your screenshot say before entering any text?

Hello Brink... When I open NewAdminPrimary and enter the ' expired ' password the screen on the screenshot appears...message is ' your password has expired and must be changed '.
When I click on OK.. the next screen ( as previously sent ) comes up.. with the old password in the top box and an empty box with NewPassword in it !... When I enter a new password the next box says ' passwords don't match '...I click on OK and am returned to the first screen again !.

I've done my best to describe the scene ! Hope it makes sense !.

Not sure why you're not getting the usual top box, but you can use the method I posted in post #5 linked below to disable password expiration for your account.

You have not posted your equivalent of the password change screen shown in Brink's tutorial

Are the diagrams you have posted correct i.e. are they what you are seeing instead of the expected diagram?

When you had your previous Admin accounts problem, I thought that you created two new Admin accounts.
- The intention was that the second Admin account could then be used if the first went haywire.
- You are going to have to log in to that second Admin account in order to be able to use the procedure in Brink's tutorial [Option 2].
- If, as I think you have written above, you did not create a second Admin account & Alan is only a Standard user account then you will not be able to use the procedure in that tutorial because it can only be done by an Admin account.
- You will need to use the procedure in the tutorial about enabling the Built-In Admin in order to create an additional Admin account in order to sort this out - Enable ... Built-in Elevated Administrator Account
