Are you still able to open a command prompt at that screen by pressing Shift + F10?

    Alan,

Using Brink's tutorial, you use the link given in Option 5 para 1 open a command prompt at boot (Shift+F10). In other words, you
    - boot from the USB
    - check language, format & keyboard settings at the initial dialog that appears, then click on Next,
    - then you will see the main install screen. Stop there. Do not click on Install now. Instead, click on Repair your computer.

Then you return to Brink's Enable ... Built-in Elevated Administrator Account tutorial.
    - The procedure is quite intricate and you have to do exactly what he says so double-check every step.
    - The procedure does work but mistakes can be very serious.

    Alan,

Before embarking on this intricate procedure, please would you respond to something that I asked about before because there is a small chance that the system will co-operate.
    - Log in as Alan, your standard user account
    - Try to open anything elevated such as right-clicking on the Start menu & choosing Windows PowerShell [Admin] / Command prompt [Admin].
Q1 In the Admin prompt that appears, does it allow you to choose NewAdminPrimary as the account to use to give permission?
Q2 In the Admin prompt that appears, does it allow you to enter either the original password or the new password you have been trying to set up?
Q3 If either of these answers is No, what does actually happen?

    Alan,

Using that command prompt, you should be able to do what I posted earlier (linked below) to enable the built-in Administrator account so you can sign in to that account to disable password expiration for your account.

As Denis posted earlier, it is critical that you get familiar and comfortable with the steps first, and be sure to follow them exactly.

    Hello Brink,

Knowing the need for accuracy..I opened the cmd...which had as its heading...
x :Sources... entered regedit.. found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE..clicked File..then on Load Hive , which took me to a screen headed ' sources ' as opposed to the one headed ' config ' in your tutorial...i opened this and found after ' picture's.. three drives..one my (C:) drive..one my USB (D:) drive...and one labelled ' Boot(X:)...

AND not knowing where t o go to find a SAM file... and to avoid any slip-ups. I abandoned ship !.

Can you point me in the right direction please ?

    Alan,

As illustrated in para 5 of the procedure, you need to browse to the folder called config.
    - Starting off in another folder is normal [you have started in one called Sources and it is almost certainly not on the right drive yet either]
    - You can start off by clicking on This PC and then look at each drive [except X - the X drive is useless to you, do not even look at it] to find one that has a folder called Windows
    - Drive letters might temporarily not be the same as normal. This is not a problem as they will revert to normal when you reboot normally.
    - then, assuming it is the F drive [but it could be C/D/E/F/...], browse down to the folder F:\Windows\System32\Config - if the folder is not there then you have chosen to look in the wrong drive so just look for another [but not X]
    - that will take you to the right folder to be able to select the SAM file [procedure para 6]

Denis and Brink.. thanks !..i now have an Administrator box on my welcome screen and..i think that I navigated regedit accurately, finally using the ' enable ' binary change.

Can you remind me again how to create a password to Sign in to the Administrator account ?.. or will I need to disable the password expiration on my old account
    first ?.

    Alan,

The "Administrator" account will not have a password by default. You would just leave the password field blank when you sign-in.

I hope disabling password expiration for your account will go smoothly for you.
