Asking for Password that Doesn't Exist after Win 10 Update

After Win 10/Win Defender Update, 2016 Dell 7000 laptop it is requiring a password that doesn't exist! Again there was never a password, but it gives a hint of "Yr"! Have tried every date I could think of w/no luck! Have been in Win forums and support pages using primary Win 8 desktop PC, to no avail!

It will not respond to F8 or any "F" commands for that matter, so no Safe Mode! The only thing that it will respond to 50% of the time is pressing "Shift" then Restart, which takes me to a light blue "Choose an Option" screen. These 4 options are about as useful as the lame suggestions in the various support forums, where these geniuses suggest going to various files/folders...which would be nice if not Locked out!! It's like saying my engine won't start and the best answer is, "just drive it to the mechanic"... Sorry, just frustrated bc all was well until today's update!
Although a first for me, seems to be a common issue w/Win 10, which I've had since '16 and still not a fan in spite of the few improvements... Please advise with a viable solution. Keep in mind, there was never a password and I'm locked out, so No access to PC, files, utility, etc.
    Thank you,
    SJL

You will have to do the non-destructive repair to remove that password.

Try option 5 and activate the built in Administrator account at boot. Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Make sure your local account is set to administrator account Change Account Type in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

Remove any passwords on your local account Remove Password of Local Account in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

When finished, disable the built in Administrator account again.

There is NO recovery disc/USB... my understanding is to create, need a clear USB drive and another Win 10 PC which do not have...

Make sure your local account is set to administrator account Change Account Type in Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials HOW, NO ACCRESS, TUTORIALS assume you're logged in!!

All good if I could get in! These tutorials mean nothing if locked out! This is all good if you're in and have full access... There is no utility access, again F functions non responsive! Can't explain any better...

You will have to do the non-destructive repair to remove that password. What does that mean/involve?

In option 5 there is a link to option 6 if you don't have an installation USB. It will take you to the recovery options. When you enable the built-in Admin account, you will boot in using that account. That will allow you to change passwords or account type or even create a new Admin user account.

You don't have to have another Windows 10 computer to create an installation USB. Any computer can do that or download an ISO file to create one.

That was what I read in another support forum, but tried anyway from Win 8 desktop! The actual problem was; first no clear USB drive, so used one that had other files/folders, but still plenty of space left. When plugged into laptop, just got error windows, would not even open the drive to select the password!

Have looked at so much, don't remember the details, but option 6 was of no help, no access to anything mentioned! The only command prompt available is where Win 10 boots directly to password field... Thanks anyway!

Option Five referred you to Option Six here which is a tutorial on how to get to Advanced Startup. This option uses the fact that a hard reset three times in a row boots to the Recovery options, from where you can get to Advanced Startup. That's where you'll find the Command Prompt.

Bree, that's not my quote you have posted. I tried to tell him basically the same thing you told him. I think that is his response to my post.

If you have a Microsoft account and used it when you were setting up Windows, try entering the password for that.

Don't know how that got wrongly attributed, sorry - corrected now. Yes, I was basically trying to help get your point across.
