My windows 10 user name is "stan". There is a folder under the folder \user\ named \stan\. And there is a folder \stan\ at the same level as \user\. Both \stan\s contain exactly the same sub-folders and files. File Explorer shows the locations on the C: drive:
\stan\
\user\stan\
Why does this configuration exist?
Should I do something about it?
If so, what?

This is probably just how File explorer chooses to display things rather than a real problem.
Please would you post a File explorer screenshot so that the situation can be better understood.

I discovered while taking the screen shot that the duplicate of \stan\ only occurs when viewing what File Explorer displays over my network. The duplicated folder does not display on the C: drive where \users\ is.
I have three Win10 computers connected. Each sees the duplicated (mirror) folder when viewing another computer (or itself) over the network.
As far as I know this does not cause a problem. Maybe it is supposed to happen and happens to all networks? Whether or not it is normal, I am interested in understanding what the point is.

That looks to me like you have shared the whole of your Users folders and you have also separately shared your Stan folder.
You can stop one of them appearing by unsharing the folder concerned - right-click, Properties, Sharing tab, Advanced sharing, uncheck the box for Share this folder.
