Permissions issue when trying to change file properties

    Hi all -

    Problem Description:
I have a number of media files from ripping/converting my DVDs to a drive that I use for streaming.
Some of the older files I have have data in them in properties (Right click file, left click Properties, Details Tab) that for whatever reason display the title listed there instead of what I have named the file when searching from another device on my network.(For instance, "Kong Skull Island", the file name displayed on my PC, to other devices displays "KONG_SKULL_ISLAND.theatrical" - as it shows in the title section on the details tab found as above). When I click on "Remove Properties and Personal Information", whether I try to remove just the title or all of the information, I first get the message "You'll need to provide administrator permission to apply properties to this file". I have the options of Continue, Skip, Cancel. Cancel will obviously not accomplish anything. Skip gets a similar result - nothing. Continue then generates the message "You need permission to perform this action. You require permission form <User> to make changes to this file." With options to then cancel or try again.

    Other information:
Running Windows 10 Pro, Build 10.0.16299.
I am only User on this PC, and I have full permissions, admin, etc (as far as I know).
I am listed in the same "Details" tab as the Owner of this file.
I no longer have this DVD or a few others, so simply trying to rip again is out.
I have moved, renamed, rebooted, etc and a number of other things from another forum without avail (I recently came here from another forum and got my first issue solved (thank you), so going back to this older one here now with high hopes - no pressure )

    Fire away!

On General tab->Will display what ever the file name of the Video
On Details tab->Will display the Meta Data of the file, buried inside the Video.

Click on the Security tab->Edit the list & add "Everyone" to the list with full permission to see if you can change the Meta Data.

To view the Meta Info of avideo/audio file. Download: MediaInfo
Unzip and run, drag and drop the file then you'll get all meta data ie. Movie Name, codec, size etc...

    [QUOTE=dasquared;1339446]Hi all -

    Hi,
Did you resolve this issue please??
I have exactly the same issue..

I have a need to change some tag @ meta-data for video and audio files… especially Title for Video files (avi, mp4, mkv..)
I can see this information displayed in Windows @ Properties/ Detail tab and also @ Win File Explorer/ View/ Details Pane.. but for some files I can fix the tag and for some files can't.
I didn't find any protection set-up that prevents me to change tags on some files.
Only what I found is the field @ Properties/ Detail tab/ Content - Protected.. where for the files they allow me to edit tags is the value= "No" and for the files they can't be changed is the value= blank.

I tried to add "Everyone" (as suggested in the answer above) to the Windows @ Properties/ Security tab.. but no difference.
Also the suggested software MediaInfo above doesn't help.. it shows the meta-data (only if the field is not blank).. but doesn't allow to change it, only export it out..
I have full Admin-access in my PC.. with Win10..

I know the way how to edit Meta-data of video files in Win10.. but if I have 3 test-files saved in my folder:
    - one file is fully editable
    - second shows for example field Title with wrong text and doesn't allow me to change it
    - third file has Title field empty (blank) and doesn't allow me to fill the right text in.. (via @ Properties/ Detail tab) and some software even not showing the field itself as it's blank.. (via @ Win File Explorer/ View/ Details Pane) ..thus I can't write in it the new text as the blank-filed is not displayed at all..

I tried to change the Rating – stars (via @ Win File Explorer/ View/ Details Pane) on the file where I was not allowed for change of Title.. then I got to the screen “You need to provide Admin permission..” with button “Continue”.. but no chance to key-in admin password.. if I use the button “Continue” then it returns me back to the same screen “You need Admin access” without any action and new button "Try again".. so the only one real option here is to “Cancel” the operation..

I tried to use the Win Media Player or VLC.. the filed Title can be fixed, but the change is visible only in that software.. the Windows tag is really not changed..

I tried also Win-X to start Win PowerShell… but it doesn’t seem me to be the solution.. the Meta-data is not listed here..

Also the article @ Add, Change, and Remove File Property Details in Windows 10 is not resolving my issue (i believe so)

    Hi,
It seems the part of the answer is written above by Bree (How do I edit the metadata of mp4, avi and mkv files?) ... and I found some more details... the software I managed to change MKV meta-data >> MKVToolNix … a free video metadata editor for Matroska (MKV) video format. It provides a ‘Header Editor‘ tool which enables you to edit metadata information of a MKV video. Other features of this software worth mentioning are Chapter Editor and Multiplexing. It can be used to create, edit, and examine MKV videos by opening or dropping them to its interface. You can also customize some preferences like interface language, font and size, layout, etc. MKVToolNix Downloads – Matroska tools for Linux/Unix and Windows

I know you say you have permissions but have you tried running a "Take Ownership" batch file on the files concerned? It is easy to do and won't cost anything so why not try it? See Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10 .

    Hope it works.
