Permissions error on Start Menu folder

I cannot seem to install any programs that create shortcuts in the Start Menu folder. I get a permissions error as seen here: https://i.imgur.com/ypiTfeq.png

I have checked the Security tab on the start menu folder itself and all users already have full control checked. Not sure what else to do. There are no other user accounts on the computer other than myself which is an admin account. https://i.imgur.com/kTzBJa3.png

You showed screen print of user James but I think (someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that installers don't run under your user profile but rather TrustedInstaller. When you run an installer it will generally ask you (via UAC) to take Administrator privileges (i.e. run as Administrator).

What do you have for this? If it looks different that could be an issue.

TrustedInstaller.exe is a process of Windows Modules Installer service in Windows 10/8/7/Vista. Its main function is to enable installation, removal and modification of Windows Updates and optional system components.

Windows Installer (previously known as Microsoft Installer, codename Darwin) is a software component and application programming interface (API) of Microsoft Windows used for the installation, maintenance, and removal of software.

Still get the problem on a new user account. I have UAC disabled and running as Admin doesn't help either.

Please post either text or pictures in the forum. I don't want to look at imgur for every screen print.

Permissions error on Start Menu folder-capture.png

Anyway it looks like you have been playing with your permissions. You have removed everything except your profile. That was a mistake.

Look above - SYSTEM, Administrator, Administrators, Users and Everyone need some sort of access. If you don't know how permissions work then don't change them.

You could add Administrators group I guess - it might work but I'd just backup your data and reinstall - resetting permissions never works.

Sorry to sound prescriptive but you have broken your install and need to start again.
