Actually there are two types of Standard user account: a local user account or Microsoft services user account. So in my last post I should have said, "I converted a Standard local user account to an Standard Microsoft services user account" if I wanted to be completely accurate with my terminology.

Guys, I've since done a fresh reinstall of Windows 10, and everything is working fine.

Word of advise, if you're running Win7/8 using Administrator username, create another user before upgrading to Windows 10 and use that. On a fresh install of Windows 10, when I enabled Administrator and logged in with it, it doesn't even have an option to associate it with Microsoft account, and most apps don't even launch under Administrator username - for instance trying to launch Edge comes back with "Windows 10 Edge can’t be opened using the built-in administrator account", and some other apps produce similar error.

So it was just a botchered transfer of the built in Administrator account from Win7 to Win10 during upgrade.

You can change how the built-in Administrator account works yes, but "fix" is relative to the access you want the built-in Admin. to have. The administrator-user account seems enough for my needs, and has access to Edge, etc.

Dass, are you certain it's the same problem och had? I converted a Standard user account to a Microsoft account and can convert it back to the Standard account easily in the manner you've described. But och's problem was different in that he had converted the Administrator account to a Microsoft account. He appeared to have tried everything, but the problem was that the options available in the interface were different because it was an Administrator account he was trying to convert back.

Wordsworth, My account name was "Dass" and it was an Administrator account!
