It looks like you set the DisableSR DWORD for the wrong key. It should be this key below instead.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
You win. What happened is I copied the location and pasted it into Regedit and it went to the wrong key because the right one did not exist and, of course, I didn't double check. You are right as usual, it works immediately -

Is there a way to stop updates, or anything else, disabling system restore?

    Hello, :

Usually, System Protection is enabled and turned on by default for the Windows "C:" drive, so nothing should be disabling it by default.

    Hello Brink,
"should" is the key word here, I have had it disabled several times, especially with feature updates; I did some looking on the internet and there are others with the same problem. What prompted this question is that something disabled restore and I don't know what because I wasn't doing anything to the OS; it would not be a problem except it deletes the restore point.

It's always best to rely on updated system images instead.

    But ...

    • System protection is turned off by default.

    • System Protection will be reset to the default of being turned off.

Uh... you lost me here, how to you get an "updated system image" without downloading and creating it on your PC?

Yeah, they're always changing the default to on and off for system protection for that.

Personally, I would not rely only on system protection, and keep updated system images instead.

I personally like the free "Macrium Reflect" to create system images with.
