    Hello,

I've performed the steps to disable system restore and turned off system restore for all of my drives before doing the Group Policy configuration; however, when I went in to configure System Restore in the Recovery menu, it showed that System Restore was On for my C drive. I was hoping that by disabling System Restore in Group Policy would prevent applications from enabling it again, but I guess not. I don't know if updating Windows would have enabled System Restore on my C drive or if running an application turned System Restore on before doing a cleanup. Is there any way to ensure that System Restore will not be turned on by an application or Windows?

    Hello TON,

Are you system protection settings grayed out like below after disabling system restore?

Yes, and my protection was on, just like in the picture, but now they are off because I manually turned C drive protection off before applying the group policy setting:

    That's normal.

The system restore feature is disabled despite the individual setting showing as turned on.

Okay, good to know. I was hoping that other apps couldn't override group policy settings.

    What app is overriding it?

Sometimes a Windows update may reset some settings back to default though.

I can't remember which app off the top of my head. I do know that before applying this fix, I ran an app to either cleanup my system or uninstall an application, and the program I used created a restore point before performing its work. There wasn't an option to prevent the program from creating a restore point, so I figured that by turning off system restore, the program would attempt to create the restore point but give up after seeing that system restore was disabled; however, the program took it upon itself to enable system restore and create a restore point anyway. I didn't realize that the program created the restore point until I noticed that my SSD had lost ~10 GB of free space in a matter of days, despite the fact that I hadn't installed any programs or updates. I then did some investigating realized that system restore was enabled and there was a restore point.

This has been quite awhile ago though. I did end up enabling the group policy feature shortly after this event, but I just noticed that my system restore was showing enabled again, despite being turned off in group policy, which prompted me to post here.

Would a Windows Update override the group policy setting though? That seems counter productive, since the whole point of group policy is to override programs/users from changing settings that you want to stay a certain way.

A program certainly could be set to change these settings by the developer. Of course it would have to be running as administrator.

I've found it not uncommon for a Windows update to randomly reset something back to default. It's always a good idea to double check all of your settings afterwards just to verify.
