    A program certainly could be set to change these settings by the developer. Of course it would have to be running as administrator.

    I've found it not uncommon for a Windows update to randomly reset something back to default. It's always a good idea to double check all of your settings afterwards just to verify.
    AH! Running as an admin. Hmmm.... I'll have to investigate this option. Thank you for the advice! I'll look into it.

    EDIT: It shows as on again:

    But if it's normal, then I don't care.

    Correct, that's perfectly normal.

    It may show as turned on for a drive in the settings, but the system restore feature is disabled.

    Okay, good. I'll try to keep my panic at a lower level.

    The GPO fix doesn't seem to work for me. I lost 9+ GB of space on my SSD. Not sure what app would have power over a GP rule, but it did. I had to disable the GP rule, delete the restore points, turn off System Restore on my SSD, then reenable the GP rule. Anyone else had this happen?

    Hello TON,

    It depends on what was originally set to cause this.

    My guess is that it's some cleanup utility or registry cleaner, but my point is that these programs shouldn't have the ability to control a group policy configuration. I feel like group policy and registry settings should be the Gods of the settings, meaning that no normal application should have the power to overrule them. I'll try to do a better job at paying attention to the programs that I run; my problem is that I run multiple fixes at once to fix an issue without testing the system after each fix.

    I have tried for HOURS to get a shortcut to work with Powershell but I keep getting "Access denied" because it will not elevate even with the RunAs option; if run internally with Adminstrator - Powershell ISE it runs great. Does the .reg file disable/enable restore immediately or is reboot required, I gave it a try and it was not greyed out?

    Hello mate,

    It should take effect immediately.

    If System Protection settings are not grayed out, then it's enabled.

    I set DisableSR to 1, logged off, restarted and it never did grey out so I am concerned if it will enable; the issue stems from SR being disabled with some updates.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
    "RPSessionInterval"=dword:00000001
    "SRInitDone"=dword:00000001
    "LastMainenanceTaskRunTimeStamp"=hex(b):04,69,93,3b,e2,14,d7,01
    "FirstRun"=dword:00000000

    "RestoreStatusTimeStamp"=hex(b):44,83,8b,2f,b0,13,d7,01
    "RestoreStatusDescription"="Installed HP Hotkey Support."
    "RestoreStatusSource"=dword:00000001
    "DisableSR"=dword:00000001

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\cfg]
    "DiskPercent"=dword:0000000f

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore\ErrorReportFiles]
    "restore"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Logs\\SystemRestore\\restore.0.etl"

    It looks like you set the DisableSR DWORD for the wrong key. It should be this key below instead.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore
