My apologies for taking your time Kari. A little more research and I found the answer. I just needed to uncheck "Read Only" in the properties of the install.wim file.

I was going to too far into that file with trying to change security permissions and owners. It was very simple. Thank you for your patience.

Seems to be running fine now.

Just to be sure, check properties of the install.wim file in your ISO_Files folder. First, check that Read only is unchecked:

In Security tab, check that administrators have all rights:

... and that authenticated users have modify, execute, read and write rights:

If yes to all of above, try to copy install.wim file from ISO to another drive than D: which you have used and use it as source.

Now that the script has successfully run and updated the install.wim file. What is the process to put those files in the D:\sources back into a usable iso?

Could you please tell how did you finally manage to mount the WIM file?

If you already have USB install media for the same version of Windows 10, just delete the install.wim file from its Sources folder, replacing it with your updated one.

If you don't have USB media done yet, copy the ISO content to a folder for instance ISO_Files, then replace install.wim in Sources with your updated one. Use your preferred method to write those files to a USB flash drive.

I've done another PS script to do that, you might want to give it a try: PowerShell Scripting - Create USB Install Media for Windows 10 | Windows 10 Tutorials

I mentioned it in post #10. I went to the properties of the install.wim file and unchecked "Read Only". My mistake was going to the security tab and changing owners and permissions, that didn't work. The rest makes sense. I should also be able to follow the same procedure with the downloaded iso on the hard drive by mounting it and replacing the install.wim file with the modified one. Thanks for the help. How often do you find yourself downloading a new cab or msu file to do this? Seems with the frequent changes to Windows, it could be once or twice a month.

My apologies, I somehow totally missed that post.

I run Windows Insider builds on all machines, currently build 17713, and create new install media at least a couple times a month when new builds have been released.

Running general releases, it's not a bad idea to repeat the install media update process monthly after patch Tuesday.

You know that's one of the things that still keeps me interested in computers. I'm good with quite few areas, but there is much more I don't know, and as long as there is more to learn I'll keep at it. You have helped that process.

Excluding this update process, I'm still wondering what gets updated when installing from an untouched iso? Doesn't Windows connect to a server during the install and update some things?

Yes, but at least cumulative updates will not be installed at setup phase.

When I try to replace the original install.wim file in mounted iso with the modified install.wim file, it will not let me. The research I've done says this happens when the file format is not NTFS, but It's just a mounted iso.

You actually must extract the iso. Or you can mount the iso, and copy the files to a folder. Then you can replace the install.wim, and rebuild the iso. If you are going to use this iso to install windows from a usb drive, just copy the original files from the mounted iso to the usb drive. If you have UEFI it must be formatted fat32. Then you can replace the original install.wim with your modified install.wim, reboot your computer to USB drive, and install Windows.
