Windows Insider - Clean install latest Fast Ring build  

If you cut to the chase by invoking OOBE whilst in the Defaultuser0 mode, why not just apply the relevant WIM/ESD image with DISM, cutting out the preparatory checks and operations run by Windows Setup to get straight to OOBE? Surely this is an approved methodology for deployment, and lends itself to automation if it (the reset/update) is to be regularly repeated with new insider builds?

Depending on the required configuration - GPT/UEFI or MBR/BIOS, you can make it as elaborate or compact as you like for your chosen hardware and system needs.

Where would you get WIM / ESD file?

The starting point, whole idea in this tut is to get as cleanly installed Fast ring build as possible in a way that is supported. When Microsoft's Insider team sees an ISO made from UUP files as a big bad wolf, a big no no, where and how would you get install.wim image to apply? As soon as you make it from UUP files, you are in unsupported territory.

Those downloads are not Fast Ring builds. They are either last official release, at the moment 1709, or last Slow Ring ISO, at the moment 16299. Applying those images does not give user latest Fast Ring build, at the moment 17025.

Tutorial tells to download one of them to have an officially supported install media to start with (official release or Slow Ring ISO), then use defaultuser0 to upgrade.

I might misunderstand something, but my question remains: where to get the last Fast Ring install.wim to be applied?

Yep, that is the real question here. And the answer is: From nowhere

Thanks for this Kari, worked nicely. Only issue I had was that I had to restart after creating the user as there was no sign out option. I then deleted the excess user folders and all seems ok.

I tried to use this tutorial along with the Move \Users tree tutorial to perform a clean install.

What I did was as Step 1.2, rather than just hitting SHIFT + F10, I went to the Move Users tree tutorial and took over from there, starting with the CTRL + SHIFT + F3 to reboot into Audit mode. Once that process was completed and I was back at an OOBE prompt, I resumed from step 1.2 here, but when I went to perform the steps, after authenticating for WU, it would not let me change from the normal WU Update set up, and since I was in a rush to complete it I stopped trying with this tutorial and decided to complete the OOBE and then change the values for IP builds.

Does that sound like something simply glitched, or would this be a known issue since I combined the 2 tutorials? For example, instead of giving me a defaultuser0 account, after performing the Users tree move, the OOBE was in an account actually named administrator.

If this was a one off, no worries, but as I just clean installed everything, I can set up a VM and capture screenshots and whatnot if you'd like to explore this further, on the off-chance that it is not a one-off.

Just curious to see your thoughts on this.

Sorry for delayed reply.

If relocating users, you should do it first after restart in step 2.10 when Windows Setup returns to region selection, and boot from there to Audit Mode.
