OK, I get it now. That's when for you are already running WS and you need to reinstall using the Pro edition ISO.
After which the store allows you to get the WS upgrade.
Yeah - the quote above is from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool page. They tell you to install Pro and then convert using the Store.

If you don't already have a digital license for WS then you get the option to pay.

You can still (currently) swap back and forth using generic keys as long as you have a digital license for both - using the Store is just another option. It may become the only one (although I lost the link for that).

    Hi,

OK. Thanks. I guess I could give it a try using the generic key but my hardware is rather "modest".

    Cheers,

I'm running it on a Core 2 Duo MacBook from 2006 with 2GB RAM - I don't think I can add 3 more CPU sockets or exceed the RAM limit - it is free upgrade for insiders so I took it.

    I like the name :)

    Hi,

    I like the name :)
LOL. So do I. It gives you kind of a status, doesn't it ?
I can't recall the number of times I converted Server editions to Workstation really. Those OS's were rock solid.
Never experienced a single crash from W2K onwards.
Maybe I should rejoin the Insider Programme again. Just out of curiosity of course.

    Cheers and thanks,

    Hey Guys,
Is it worth doing a fresh install to Workstation, would there be any benefits?

    Hello MrBasher,

    It depends.

Since you already have Windows 10 Pro, it would be much easier to quickly update to Pro Workstation without losing anything by simply changing the product key. You can update without missing a beat, and pick up right where you left off.

If you are currently having issues in your Windows 10 Pro, then it may be best to clean install Pro Workstation to not have those issues anymore. However, you will have to start from scratch again.

Doing a "change product code" will just unlock the Workstation features that are not in Pro. Nothing is as far as I know installed or uninstalled. You can go up and down editions with one exception. Once you upgrade from Home there is no going back to Home without reinstalling Windows. Any other change is fine. I've gone up from Pro to Workstation and even Enterprise via change product code. And back to Pro the same way. I was a Microsoft MVP and have legal product codes for all editions, just in case you are wondering. I'm not doing anything illegal.

Is there a Worksation installation or do you have to install Pro first?

If you have Windows 10 Pro already installed, you can update by changing the product key like in the tutorial.

If not, then you can directly clean install Windows 10 Pro Workstation with the usual Windows 10 ISO file if wanted. It's the product key you enter during installation that determines which edition of Windows 10 gets installed.

What Brink said, you can clean install Pro Workstation. You'll need a valid legal product code to activate it the first time.
