After translating my install.esd file from the installer thumb drive to install.wim file, still can't repair my Windows 10 box because DISM still says it is not for offline servicing.
Could you tell us precisely what it is that you are trying to do with DISM? That way we can make some suggestions that will allow you to accomplish your goals.
That said, yes, there are many operations that DISM will not do on an ESD file, but that will require a .WIM file instead.
Note that if you converted a .WIM file into a .ESD file in order to get around the 4 GB file size limit of FAT32, there are ways around that. However, before going into those details, I'd like to find out what you goal is in order to give you a complete solution. So, if you could include the reason why you converted the install.wim to install.esd, that would be very helpful.
I wanted to repair a corrupt component store to repair an unbootable image. I have solved this problem by mounting the wim and specify the mounted directory (more precisely, I had to specify the windows\winsxs folder in the mount source directory, in my case e:\mnt\windows\winsxs). The component store is fine now. One part of the repairs was to dug up the update from the Component Catalog which contained a necessary component for .net 4.8.1, which was not available in the install image.
