Has this happened after upgrading to 1909? If so you either hope MS will fix it, or revert to 1903.

I just upgraded Win 7 straight to the latest one. 1903 doesn't have this "upgrade"? Can I still revert to that version?

I'm not sure. Those upgrading from an earlier build of Win 10 have the 1909 'enablement' package (like a Windows Update but a unique thing MS came up with for 1903-> 1909) which is listed in e.g. the Control Panel which you can uninstall. That's what I did..

I can see that, in the Chinese thread, the OP is being led down a blind alley - the problem is not affected by running SFC and that respondor should have tried searching in Ver 1909 File explorer to reach an informed opinion before 'advising' others.

    All the bext,

    Matthew,

There are several threads about File explorer search problems with Version 1909.
    - Some people report that they cannot click in the search bar
    - Some people just miss the dropdown boxes that appear when key syntax is entered
    - I keep finding that the search index needs to be rebuilt before any results can be found
    - Other people have reported other issues with it

The common factor is the use of Version 1909.

I will just await the CU that will fix things. It might well be issued next

    See KB4535996 CU Win 10 v1903 build 18362.693 and v1909 build 18363.693
    and its MS original https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4535996

You have to read both the v1909 & v1903 bits to see all the identified issues that the update addresses. They include
    - Addresses an issue that prevents the Windows Search box from rendering fully in the space allotted for it.
    - Addresses an issue that might prevent the Windows Search box from showing results.
