    Brink that helped, thanks.
I got into Safe mode but no help in Services, as Windows Search properties still grayed out. I wonder if there is a regedit hack?

Just to verify, are you currently signed in to an administrator account?

If you are, go ahead and post a screenshot of the Windows Search Properties window to see if anything may stand out.

That's it, Brink, I was signed in as Standard user, as usual. I had to sign in a Admin to change any Windows service. What's weird is that for everything else requiring Admin permission, I don't have to log in as Admin, but Windows simply asks for Admin password, e.g., to create restore point. But not for changing a Windows service setting apparently. Who would have thought?
    Great work!

    If you get a:
    Code:
    [SC] ControlService FAILED 1051:

A stop control has been sent to a service that other running services are dependent on.
    error when running
    sc stop "wsearch"

    Use this synchronous command instead:
    net stop wsearch /yes
The net stop command with /yes will automatically stop all the dependent services as well, and since it's synchronous, won't continue on in scripts until it's done.
