Hi,
Yeah if you know and go to everything manually search really isn't needed.

Another side effect of disabling indexing is that Windows Search (SearchApp.exe) will then display messages stating that indexing was turned off. See screenshots below.
There doesn't seem to be a way to turn these messages off in the UI. The solution is to turn off search online / web results for Windows Search. This also disables these indexing messages.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer]
"DisableSearchBoxSuggestions"=dword:00000001
These indexing messages aren't mentioned in either this or the linked guide. Perhaps you could note this as a warning when disabling indexing. Or even add a separate guide for this.
Any reason to turn off indexing with Windows 2004? It's so un-intrusive and in my experience 2004 Windows Search works well in Enhanced mode. Of course it's not perfect and third party search apps like Agent Ransack are required to fill the gap sometimes (rarely for me).

I agree... too many people want to dive in and hack away removing things that aren't actually impinging on performance, space or anything else- e.g. IE or the Store. Search indexing still carries its XP legacy - its problem is that it needs to be understood quite well to be useful rather than frustrating.
(Hint- using Windows search on a fully indexed disk/partition is as fast as any of the 3rd party tools, and can include content indexing, which those don't- ideal for data disks).
Using search syntax allows you to perform highly specific searches - more so than 3rd party tools typically allow.
Can't do anything to search as I get this error...

Any help appreciated.
I have tried most things on the internet...
Including repair install, various registry changes among other things.
I don't want to do a clean install:///

Sorry- which error? Can't see that: here it is using more convenient forum features which are easier for respondents:
Please post relevant screenshots, thus:
including from where you are starting the search: possibilities:
- the search box (Win key + S or perhaps on your taskbar)
- the search box top right of file explorer
- the search box in Settings
- some other search box.
It may well be better to start your own individual thread rather than in comments on a tutorial, and include your build
When you do, include the history- when it last worked, what happened since.
- common plea.... so of course you routinely use disk imaging to minmise the risk of having to do so, I hope?I don't want to do a clean install:///
Tirelessly recommended here- Macrium Reflect (free- paid).
Simple test of whether indexing is working:
Open Indexing options. Note the number of items listed. Is indexing shown as complete?
Now add one item to an indexed folder that should be indexed.
Does the number of items indexed increment? It should do, provided your PC has little other resource use.
Try the simplest stuff first -
First, check that Windows Search is running in Services.
Then, go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Search and Indexing and run that troubleshooter.
Not knowing what registry changes you made complicates the issue.
Did you create System Restore points, or disk image backups, before changing stuff?
You may well be looking at a clean install.
All else failing, one "last resort" before a clean install is to run Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All In One) tool.

Did you try running the Search and Index Troubleshooter?
Are you running as an Administrator, or a Standard user?
