Hello, I've used Mklink like it was described in the OP to backup 800GB of pictures and videos for my father. Everything got transferred to a cloud successfully however he claims the local copies have gone. Is this a known occurrence or is there a user error?

I've read on different websites and in this forum possibly conflicting advice. Some say I should use the /d flag, others /j. Do they both work for OneDrive? If so, how do they differ in the way they work? Which is best? ( I want all changes ... additions, edits and deletions ... to files in a local folder to be backed up online in OneDrive.)

I read on the first page of this thread a comment that if a file is deleted from the local folder the OneDrive cloud copy doesn't get deleted. Is that true?

    Hello,

In this situation, you would want to use the "/j" flag.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ommands/mklink

Create Soft and Hard Symbolic Links in Windows

/d Creates a directory symbolic link. By default, this command creates a file symbolic link.

    /j Creates a Directory Junction.

It is true it will not get deleted from the OneDrive cloud, but I would test to make sure nothing has changed since then.

    Thanks for your reply.
It is true it will not get deleted from the OneDrive cloud.
Can you suggest an alternative by which deletions from the local folder will be mirrored in the cloud so that the cloud folder is maintained as an exact copy of the local folder?

I suppose one way would be to work from the OneDrive cloud online instead.

Will all additions and edits (changes) be copied to the OneDrive cloud folder? If they are, then perhaps for my purposes it won't matter if deletions are not also.

Assuming that additions and edits are copied, it sounds as if what these links do is "update" rather than "mirror" in FreeFileSync terminology. It seems curious that there isn't an alternative that allows me to mirror.

Correct. The file online will be updated for changes at the source when synced.
