I have Wordpad installed but ULTRAEDIT is set as the default, so a showstopper for me.

You can try the new .reg files to see if they may work with ULTRAEDIT. It appears to be an issue with NotePad being a Store app now.

If not, then you can always just remove the context menu.

Well, it was worth a try. At least for now it'll work with WordPad.

    Thank you @Edwin.

It didn't make any difference for me, but I added it to the .reg files in the tutorial in case it may work for others.

    Hmmm..., that's weird...

    Try adding them here:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.txt

    instead of:

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt

That did the trick. Thank you Edwin.

Tutorial now updated to make it work again using this key.

Works again, as in using NOTEPAD? Or using any app, for example ULTRAEDIT?
