    How to Add 'Copy Contents to Clipboard' to Context Menu in Windows 10

    The Copy Contents to Clipboard context menu item will allow users to copy the contents of a single .bat, .cmd, .css, .html, .js, .log, .ps1, .reg, .rtf, .txt, or .vbs file to the clipboard to make it easy to paste the contents where you like.

    This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Copy Contents to Clipboard context menu of text type files for all users in Windows 10.

    While you must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove the context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu.

    Will this reg tweak allow for selecting multiple text files and simultaneously copying all contents into one text file?

    Thanks!

    Hello bamajon,

    I'm afraid it will only work for a single file.

    Ok. Thank you. I have another question unrelated to this topic but about shell extensions. Can I send a PM?

    WIN 10 Home 1903.
    The ADD reg file creates the appropriate Registry entries but the command text does not appear in the context menu for a TXT file.

    Hello Pollensa, and welcome to Ten Forums.

    Thank you for letting me know.

    It appears that Windows 10 has changed .txt file types to reference txtfilelegacy instead of txtfile in the registry now.

    However, adding the registry entries under txtfilelegacy still didn't add the context menu as expected. It may be related to NotePad now being a Microsoft Store app instead of a desktop app, but I don't see why it would yet.

    Code:
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\CopyContents]
    "Extended"=-
    "Icon"="DxpTaskSync.dll,-52"
    "MUIVerb"="Copy Contents to Clipboard"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\CopyContents\command]
    @="cmd /c clip < \"%1\""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\shell\CopyContents]
    "Extended"=-
    "Icon"="DxpTaskSync.dll,-52"
    "MUIVerb"="Copy Contents to Clipboard"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfilelegacy\shell\CopyContents\command]
    @="cmd /c clip < \"%1\""

    I'll keep working on it to see if I may be able to find a workaround for it.

    Thanks for the rapid response. BTW I cannot vouch for any other of the filetypes in the reg file as I did not test them, only the TXT file.

    It's currently affecting these file types:

    .log

    .rtf - unless WordPad is installed.

    .txt

    @Pollensa1946,

    Ok. I have updated the .reg files in the tutorial to work properly again if WordPad is installed and set as the default program for those file types.
