Obviously I would never had written anything to this forum before having read the previous postings - and having recreated the "Shell Icons" and 29 keys, too. This firstly DID NOT WORK, I tried many times. Later on I found out that it just didn't work for a single user - myself. The other 3 users had no arrows anymore (even with the correct Empty.ico path as value of key 29 !), but I still had. I nearly gave up but than realized that Windows 10 had given wrong permissions on both the directory containing the Empty.ico file, and the Shell Icons registry keys: amongst other strange permissions, Windows allowed (by default) no read or write permission to the OWNER-CREATOR of the Shell Icons registry key !!! Without going too much into the details, all following steps were then necessary:
- move the subdirectory containing the Empty.ico file from the Windows to the User directory
- assign new permissions to this directory
- delete the erroneous permissions on the Shell Icons registry key (the wrong permissions resurrected twice, only the third deletion was successful)
>> at this stage the "arrow" became a quite big black square (see picture)
- rename the 29 subkey, create a new 29 subkey (with the path to Empty.ico)
>> still a black square for myself, no arrows nor black squares for all other users
- finally deleting the path to Empty.ico lead to the desired result…
Maybe the Winaeros Shortcut Aero Editor could have saved some headache (thanks OldMike65). But I don't like tools the action of which I do not know. Chapter closed for myself, I just have now to do the same steps on 2 laptops.
