The .reg files have been added as a download in step 2 option 1. :)
Download this attachment, "empty.ico", put it in your c:\windows\system32 folder,
1) Go to “regedit” in the run box
2) Navigate through: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\EXPLORER
3) Right click Explorer and create a new “key” called “Shell Icons”
4) Right click on the right window and click “New”--> string value
5) name it “29”
6) Right click 29 and “modify it”
7) type: “empty.ico,0” or type the full directory to navigate to that file “C:\Windows\system32...........”
This seems to be the only way to get this to work without errors, spent way too much time learning how to do this crap, ignore all the other ways. This works on 2 PCs, a Dell with Windows 7, and an HP with Windows 7.
I have used this method to change the shortcut icon but, recently, the icn has vanished after my PC has been on for a while (sometimes after a matter of minutes; sometimes after hours). I have tried re-booting and I have tried re-doing the registry entries in line with the instructions above. Whilst I am always successful in getting the icon to change in the required manner, it won't remain in place. Any suggestions?
Hello scarne, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)
To see if it may be an issue with your icon cache, rebuild it using an option in the tutorial below, and see if you still have this issue afterwards.
Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
If you do, then please post a screenshot showing your registry setting for this to see if anything may stand out.
If you used your own .ico file, where do you have it saved at?
I have followed the instructions to rebuild the Icon Cache. I will need to wait a while to see if the problem recurs or not. I will post back in 24 hours - or sooner if the problem occurs before then.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hello, thanks for the tweak which I've been using successfully for years. I'd like to ask for your help regarding an issue that MIGHT be related to this tweak (I'm honestly not sure):
1) All of my icons/thumbnails, when browsing explorer via a program's "Open/Save Dialogue", are blank. This *only* occurs when viewing via any program's open/save box, and *not* in standard Explorer windows.
2) Another odd observation is that the icons do show as normally expected upon the first time opening the open/save dialogue, but NOT the 2nd or any subsequent times. Very strange.
3) The icons/thumbs disappear when using the "extra large", "large", "medium", or "tiles" views — but they *do show* correctly in both "details" and "list".

As you can imagine, this problem causes headaches; for example, lets say I'm doing something in Photoshop and want to import a photo — I have no way of knowing which photo I'm selecting other than by its filename.
I've tried restoring the tweak as well as using the "sfc scan now" utility in command prompt; surprisingly, neither solves the issue.
Again, I'm not even sure the problem is related to this tweak, but I believe it popped up soon after I applied the tweak after a recent reformat. I'm at my wit's end here, hoping this shot in the dark could provide some needed help! I've also attached a photo.
EDIT: To clarify, those icons in the photo are actual Folders, not shortcuts or any type of link/junction.
Thanks!
