Of course not. That's just what the tutorial has included, but you can use any custom icon you like instead. I just haven't found a transparent icon included in Windows that doesn't have an outline yet.

Ok, that's a pretty good solution for now. I'll be trying something with costum icon, thanks.

Granted, it's not included in Windows, but do a Google search for "blank.ico" and you'll find pre-made blank icons without the transparent outline which were used in the hack for previous Windows versions to remove the shortcut arrow.

True. There are plenty of them to use from a Google search. I'm just hoping to find one already in Windows to make it easier.

Thank you! I've added this icon manually to the registry value "29" and this solved it!

It would be nice if the first post could include this blank icon, or a file to automatically install it for people who don't want to touch the registry directly.

    Hello Mike,

You would just need to save the blank.ico file to where you want to keep it at, and enter the full path of the .ico file in step 6 of OPTION TWO as the data value.

Ok Brink I did try adding the blank icon, BUT I think I did it a little different. Seems to work pretty well....so far.
I put the blank.icon file in my windows/system32 folder, renamed it to just blank (removed extension Icon) then went to edit line 29 to just this. blank.ico,0 that's all I put in their and rebooted shortcut arrows are gone, no outlines, look prefect. Just thought I would explain how I did this. I looked at my windows 7 computer's registry and that has been working fine for years without any shortcut arrows, only difference was in my win 7 its name is empty icon.
