this has haunted me for about ever. I think its time to go for it.
quick question before I make an image and do the deed.
Is this going to break the bazillion apps I have that undoubtedly have their settings/profiles/paths etc inside the currently named userfolder or does it retroactively change it? Or does everything use the %username% variable and as such is irrelevant?
Hello @klepp0906,
You shouldn't have ANY problems as long as you create aSystem Image
FIRST, but, if you do, then the below quote from the Tutorial should make you feel at ease . . .
It is highly recommended to create a system image before doing the steps in this tutorial to be able to quickly restore the image to undo the steps if needed since renaming a user profile folder name may have unknown side effects. For example, some programs not referencing the new profile folder name.
If there are problems, you justRe-Image
.
I hope this helps.
thats what concerns me. the image will allow a rollback sure. But I REALLY want to get this updated if possible so I'm trying to ascertain how big of a problem the "some programs not referencing the new user folder" actually is?
at that point I imagine they store that data in an ini file or the registry and a simple manual edit would address it?
has anyone ran into this at all or is it more like a disclaimer? :P I have way too many softwares installed & portables on my pc to go through them one by one and check for breakage so im trying to do a risk assessment so to speak lol.
yes, misinterpreting. I'm not worried about the image, I'm hoping I dont have to :) Curious about the incidence of the user folder name change causing issues. I guess theres one way to find out. I dont imagine its something done often so I dont imagine a bunch of people are going to be chiming in with their experiences now that I think about it lol.
I've tried this renaming thing with my new Windows installation.
So registry is done.
Folder renaming is done
But here's the weird thing:
1. When I log in to my account, I get this:
2. as you can see here, my user Gil is renamed correctly, but when I enter the folder and click on the address bar:
the above screenshots were taken while I was in the Administrator user.
If I reopen the registry, then the SID will have .bak at the end.
Hello @gil,
It looks like you may have made a mistake in renaming the user profile folder causing the error message. Double check using the tutorial below to make sure you have the correct full path of the user profile folder set for the ProfileImagePath value for your account.
Fix You've been signed in with a temporary profile in Windows 10
It still doesn't work.
It keeps creating a temp account and a .bak SID.
I followed everything 3 times.
It seems that the URL path on the explorer window keeps showing C:\Users\gille while the actual folder and ProfileImagePath are C:\Users\Gil
I don't want to create a new account... it took me hours to get to a point where I like how it's set up.
Are you able to help please?
