Windows 10: Change Name of User Profile Folder in Windows 10

    Hi Brink,

Nope, that's how I restored the Documents folder from the drive on the partition back to the C drive. The path shown in "Location" is "C:\Users\druek\Documents." I used the same procedure for all the other user folders (Downloads, etc.).

Okay, when I am in Explorer and look at the user folder in the navigation panes (left or right), it is listed as "Documents." And when I read it in the address bar, it is listed as ">(folder icon) > This PC > Windows (C:) > Users > Documents."

But when I click in the address bar to get the actual path, it reads, "(folder icon)>C:\Users\druek" as expected.

SOOO WEIRD! Hopefully there is a simple solution. Should I get out my Sharpie?

Thanks again for the lightning-fast reply.

PS Sorry about the emoticon above. I was trying to type "C : [backslash]"

In that case, lets see what you have at step 6 on the first page here for the ProfileImagePath expandable string value.

In addition, lets see what it shows in the C:Users folder.

OMG I fixed it; it was simple. After all the steps above, I had tried to change the name of the user folder from "Documents" to "druek" while I was still in the druek account. I couldn't change it because it was grayed out.

When I went to get the screenshots you asked for from the Admin account, I changed the user folder name there. It persisted, even after a restart. Easy.

Thanks for your patience and quick responses. I feel so dumb.

    Hello Brink,

My current Windows 10 Pro (x64) has an only admin user. I changed the username, but I also want to rename the user folder.

If I do follow the instructions of this thread to rename the user folder... will it affect to the already installed applications?? (Adobe CC, Office 2016, iTunes, etc.) Because they created a lot of subfolders inside the C:\Users\*User* path when installed.

Will it cause any trouble with the folders paths? Should I change any other instance of the previous path in regedit (apart from the one you showed in the screenshot)?

    Thanks in advance!

Hello dcarrington, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It shouldn't affect them, but you can always change the folder name back using the same method in the tutorial if you do see any issues with them.

It would be best to create a system image first just to be safe.

Thank you for your welcome and fast reply!

My biggest fear is to find any issues for renaming this damned folder

What happens if I create another account and delete this one? Will the folder stay or the subfolders will relocate to the new user folder?

If you delete your current account, it'll delete its profile folder.

It's nothing to really worry about since you can easily rename the folder back to the original name if you should have issues with anything from doing so.

I find a lot of instances in Regedit with paths pointing to the previous name of the folder. Should I change them all there too?

No need to. The registry key in the tutorial should auto redirect for you.
