It is for sure! But what I have never understood about the whole name change thing is, why would it not be an option to just go into the Explorer menu, choose rename, and name the dang folder whatever you want to? Security? Hogwash! Security is me being able to into MY Explorer, on MY system, and rename anything I want to rename. I can't convince myself that any of this mumbo-jumbo is all that necessary. Whatever happened to "user friendly"?

I cannot complete Step 11. I get an error message that "The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program"

I do not understand. I am logged into my Administrator account and not the profile that I am trying to rename.

    Hello tollbooth,

When this happens, you can boot into Safe Mode instead, sign in this same Administrator account, and then perform the steps.

Add local account and delete Microsoft account

Since this is still a new install, you could do this below to get what you wanted:

    1) Reset Windows 10.

    2) During the reset, set up a local account with the name Chabad instead of setting up a Microsoft account. This way the profile folder will be named "Chabad" instead of only the first 5 characters if you had set up a Microsoft account.

    3) When the reset has finished, you can switch the local account to a Microsoft account if wanted. The profile folder name will still remain as "Chabad".
This does not provide a solution as the Windows installation routine may not present the user with an option of using a local account instead of a Microsoft account.

Why doesn't the following procedure work for new hardware?

    1) Add a local account with administrative rights.

    2) Sign into the local account.

    3) Delete the Microsoft account.

    4) Delete C:\users\ subfolder of the Microsoft acccount (if not already removed by step 3 by Windows)

Hello Rogoc, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If interested, the Windows 10 installation process will always let you set up a local account instead of Microsoft account if wanted like in step 24 below.

    Clean Install Windows 10

You should be able to do your steps unless something is in use or some permission issue preventing the deletion of the user profile folder, but here are some other options for deleting an account.

I would seem to me that reinstalling the entire Windows 10 operating system because of an issue with a particular user account is not sound advice. Does anybody disagree?

I'm simply just pointing out that you are able to create a local account instead of Microsoft account during a clean install if wanted since it looked like you were under the impression you couldn't. Nothing more.

Were you able to use any of the other options to delete the account you wanted?
