How to Restore Default Location of Game DVR Captures Folder in Windows 10

The Game bar is a Xbox app Game DVR feature that lets you record and share game clips and screenshots in Windows 10. However, you can also use the Game bar to record, take screenshots, and broadcast any app and game in Windows 10.

Recorded videos are saved as a .mp4 file, and screenshots are saved as a .png file. Each video and screenshot is identified with the game’s title and metadata that shows when the image was captured.

By default, the captures are saved to your C:\Users\<username>\Videos folder, in a folder called Captures. If you like, you can move the Captures folder to another location if you don't want them saved to your C: drive.

8 After a brief moment, your Captures folder will be restored to its default location (ex: "C:\Users\Brink\Videos\Captures").

    OPTION TWO

To Restore Default Location of Captures Folder using a BAT file

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below.

    Restore_Captures_Default_Location.bat

    Download

Contents of .bat file for reference:

    Code:
    taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

    timeout /t 2 /nobreak >nul

if not exist "%UserProfile%\Videos\Captures" mkdir "%UserProfile%\Videos\Captures"

    reg add "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" /v "{EDC0FE71-98D8-4F4A-B920-C8DC133CB165}" /t REG_EXPAND_SZ /d %%USERPROFILE%%"\Videos\Captures" /f

    attrib +r -s -h "%USERPROFILE%\Videos\Captures" /S /D

    timeout /t 1 /nobreak >nul

    start explorer.exe

2 Save the .bat file to your desktop or where you like.

3 Unblock the .bat file, and run the .bat file.

4 You will now notice your screen temporarily go black as a command prompt opens and closes as explorer is restarted to apply the registry changes.

5 Copy any files you wanted from the incorrect Captures folder location into the now restored default C:\Users\<username>\Videos\Captures folder location.

6 If you like, you can delete the incorrect Captures folder (not restored default folder).

7 When finished, you can delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

Hi Shawn. I was wondering why is my captures folder still empty eventhough I transfer it and also restore it to default? >< I've tried to screenshot several times but it's not inside the folder. I sent my laptop for service before this , and I transferred the photos out of my laptop. So I believe it's because of that? But I'm not really sure.

Hello Leyn, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

When you take a screenshot using the Game DVR (Win+G), where does it show it being saved at instead?

    No "Location" tab

    Hey Brink!

Got an issue with my Captures folder. It doesn't exist.
This is where it is pointing:

I have right-clicked and gone into properties on this temp folder, but there is no "Location" tab to work with.

I have added a "Captures" folder in the temp folder to see if it would recognize it, but that does not give me a location tab either. I also added one in Pictures and another one in Videos to see if it made a difference, and still no location tab:

Any advise you can offer would be great!

I have the same problem as Jake but option 2 didn't work. The command prompt opened up and said successful but it is still saving in the Temp folder.
