"Brink is it possible to add etl to the table of file types"
Hello @KingSol, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)
.etl files are not associated with an app by default in Windows 10. If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file below to unassociate .etl files to help.
Unassociate_etl.reg
"Thanks Brink for getting back to me. I will have to do a reg backup first. Then I will have to right click the .reg file and copy it to the desktop. then I will double click the file on the desktop to do the merge? Is that correct? The other question I have, will a system restore point be taken before the merge?"
That's correct, you would just need to double click on the .reg file and approve to merge it.
It would be best to create the restore point before merging to be safe in case you have any unknown issues after the merge.
"Thanks for getting back to me Brink. I will definitely let you know how I make out."
"The file type for Windows Update Logs (C:\windows\logs\WindowsUpdate is .etl. I accidentally associated this particular file type with another app. After some research I discovered this tutorial (8703) that discusses default file type associations and how to restore them to their default values in Windows 10. The etl file type was missing from the table in this tutorial. Shawn Brink was kind enough to post a .reg file that would restore the etl file type to its' default Windows 10 value. This morning I created a system restore point prior to doing the merge of the .reg file that Shawn sent me. The merge was successful. Thanks Shawn! "
