If you like, you could download and merge the .reg file below to see if it may help since you have the 32-bit Office 2016 installed like me. It will restore the default associations and registry entries for .doc, .pps, and .xls.

I've managed to set old Office files (.doc, .pps, .ppt, .xls, etc) to be opened in Office 2016!
So, I use Office Cleaner from Microsoft to remove all of my Office installation, restart my computer, and then reinstall it again. After the installation is finished, I set my old Office files to be opened in Office 2016 via "Open With" and it works like a charm
