OK so here's what I did

There is a file extension .b9bf20c8 that somehow got associated with notepad and I think I need it to be unassociated with any application.

Every time my computer starts up, notepad opens the file and I cant did-associate it with notepad

Hello @Joker2133, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

The .reg file below will unassociate .b9bf20c8 files for you.

    Thanks for posting this tutorial.
The EXE reg file saved us on a 2012 R2 Terminal server where the EXE extension had become associated with a particular program and nothing would run! This happened via a Group Policy Preference setting gone awry.

Tried it because the server was useless and we were looking at a restore from backup.
We ran 'change user /install' before merging the reg file and 'change user /execute' after... not sure if that was necessary but it worked!

Hello Brink. Thanks for this tutorial! :)

I have different problem about this "Default Apps" settings related to Office 365 x64 which is installed in my Windows 10 Pro x64.

Actually, everything is worked perfectly, except these things: File Thumbnails and File Associations in File Explorer.

I can't set the default apps for this following extensions:

    .doc
    .ppt
    .xls

    And many more.

I've noticed that I can't set my default apps only for Office 97-2003 file extensions. Eventhough I've tried to set it via Control Panel, it just won't let me set Office 2016 application to open those files. I also have tried to set the default apps via "Open With" and search the appropriate program to open those files. It's not working either. The errors I've got is this:

    1. When I tried to set it via Control Panel, it won't save my settings. (The thumbnails are inappropriate of course)
    2. When I tried to set it via "Open With", my settings is saved but the thumbnails are inappropriate. So, I check it via Control Panel and File Explorer. The result? My settings are not saved either.

The other file extensions (such as .docx, .pptx, .xlsx) are worked fine without any problem with the correct thumbnail in File Explorer.

Is there any solution for this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Bima,

Are you able to set the programs to be default with all associations in Default Programs with Option Six below?

It is indeed. What do they show as their default program using Option 7?

If these are files created from a much older version of Office, they may no longer be compatible with Office 2016, and could be the reason they won't open in it.

There are no programs related to Office 2016 in the options, so I have to locate the executable files for Word, Excel, or Powerpoint to set it. But, my settings won't saved.

So, I tried to open my files from the program itself (e.g. I open my .doc file from Word 2016), and it opened normally. Same result for .xls and .ppt files.

    Any solution to this?
