It wouldn't hurt for me to try it... So if you are able to it would be really appreciated!
No problem. Here's a .reg file that will unassociate .vpi files for you.

    Great tutorial, Shawn!
The extension list is very useful.

But as I said :/ it would not open with any app, as it's not supposed to. It's only supposed to be imported.
VirtualBox registers the VDI extension because it is its own format. You cannot open it on double-click since its has no mount implementation / option and it's opened by VirtualBox itself in a virtual machine. The square icon refers to VirtualBox square icon and gives a 'hint' that's a virtual disk.

You can mount VDI files with imdisk or just open them with 7-Zip.

The drawback with VirtualBox is that it registers VHD and VHDX as well so the double-click mount or right-click mount don't work anymore with Windows Explorer. This tutorial saves the day in this case to restore it back for the needed disk formats.

    Hello guys,

My name is Italo Torres, I am Brazilian and I apologize for my terrible English.

I tried all the steps above and none worked.

After trying hard to solve the problem, I share with you how I managed to solve this problem.

Step 1 - Press the Windows + R keys to open "Run".
Step 2 - Type in the field, "Regedit" to enter the Windows registry.
    Step 3 - Expand the "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT" class
Step 4 - Search for the ".docx" key
Step 5 - Delete the key and restart the machine.

After restarting, Windows will create the key again.

    See you later!

Thank you for this though I have a different situation. Is it possible to reset the default protocol association? I'm asking this because I want to reset the telnet association or at least make it blank reason being is that Chrome would constantly ask me (no option to make it permanent) if I want to use the associated program for the telnet/ssh protocol. Any help is appreciated.

    Hello Carl,

Do you have the telnet/ssh protocol listed in option 6 below to set Google Chrome as the default app for the protocol?

    Hey there,

I've set it to my preferred telnet/ssh application so that whenever I open something in Chrome that uses telnet it would go to that. Unfortunately, chrome keeps asking me if I'd want to use that application (which I defaulted to). Not sure really if it's a chrome problem or the protocol association. Same happens with edge and IE.

Not sure either. It may be best to post a new thread on this issue to see if a solution may be found.

Hello Brink, I am experiencing an issue where WordPad is automatically set to the default program for .docx. We have tried changing it to word in the default filetype associations, however this only changes it for the current user. Is there a way for us to make this change for all users?

    Many thanks,
      My Computer
