    Yes it has downloaded an update. Reboot and it should start by default. If not then manually install that one from the location you found.
    I've Restarted a couple of times and it hasn't changed.

    One curious thing the version numbers:
    In C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update\Update.xml
    , it says:
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <root>
      <update minapplicable="16.0.0.0" maxapplicable="17.9.9999.9999" currentversion="17.3.6998.0830" rescan="1440" throttle="100">
        <binary url="https://oneclient.sfx.ms/Win/Prod/17.3.6998.0830/OneDriveSetup.exe" sha256hash="Yr6bOGqbvLj4RpBcTia4kfU7ajLYx3j/0tTTaLDOc/Q=" sha1hash="XPsJDRnSljVfb/Nhw5hIRGw5r5o=" />
      </update>
    </root>
    But when I look at the Settings Cog in Onedrive itself, and look at About, it reports the older version:

    I wonder if the update.xml is fooling the computer into thinking it has the later version (perhaps in 16296, or downloaded soon after I installed it) but 16299.15 put the older version in place without changing or deleting update.xml?

    As I said earlier, you have to thoroughly uninstall it using a tool like Revo Uninstaller - onedrivesetup gets confused when you use the standard uninstaller, as it leaves to much detritus in the registry.

    Also, you have to be joined to Insider Programme. I discovered if you leave the Programme, Files on Demand are not available EVEN if you are running version 7010. Interestingly, if you rejoin, the FOD option comes back i.e. option of FOD ONLY APPEARS TO INSIDERS.

    ... so I deleted the C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update folder (actually I renamed it) and Restarted.

    Result=success! Or at least it seems so. After the Restart it then downloaded a new version of Onedrive and placeholders appeared. (Of course I can't prove this wouldn't have happened anyway.)

    It was a VM with no user data so it was fairly low risk for me, but if it works for others it feels simpler than using Revo.

    I was already an Insider so I don't think that was the original cause of the issue, however I did a bit more testing and get the same behaviour as this:

    I left the programme on the VM and the placeholder icons disappeared, the same as cereberus found.

    Nice solution - also you have confirmed at least for now you need to stay in Insider Programme. I guess the one drive app switches off the FOD if it detects you are not running an Insider version. It would be great to know if this is hard coded in Onedrive exe file, or via a registry entry for example?

    I thought that version with Files On-Demand feature will be preinstalled in RTM build of Fall Creators Update. Not insider here :)

    It will be when released on October 17th 2017. It's just currently only available to Insiders until then. :)

    This is very helpful - thanks to shawn as usual - I just need to remember it all so it becomes automatic - I have yet to work out (I am sure the information is in the thread) how to add or remove files so that they always do or do not remain on the device I am using) - mostly I want to access the stuff rather than keep it always assuming OneDrive will never go completely Kaput unless those who will come after me also go Kaput then none of this will matter.
