    Hello pjd, :)

    Does your sound work otherwise?

For now, check to make sure it's turned on in all options.

No, not for Windows sounds, haven't heard a peep from it in years

But your hint reminded me that I've had Systems Sounds squelched to zilch in the 'sound mixer' - for decades

The Window's feature is pretty useless though, by the time it squeaks at me, I've typed half a page in ALL CAPS.

I've been using a gadget called Toggler, it gives visual and sound indication. When I saw the Win10 setting I thought ah-ha I might be able pension Toggler off. Toggler does have a small delay between me hitting Caps/Num lock and hearing the sound, but nothing like the delay in Windows. Maybe its because the speaker is on a BT dongle. I guess I'll keep Toggler-ing along.

    Cheers pjd

Could be. Do you have a speaker that you can connect directly to test with? Perhaps a built-in speaker in a monitor?

Attached some earplugs via the front audio jacks - same delays, Toggler short, Windows long, same wav file. And it's not the wav file(s), I checked them with Audacity for any starting silence or hi-lo transients. Maybe its the sound 'card' on the mobo

What I forgot to mention is that Num Lock produces no sound with Windows, only Caps Lock.

But even if it did work, without the delays, I'd either have to create a sound scheme just for this feature, or put up with Windows playing chimes, dinging bells, pressing buzzers every time I did anything.

In an ideal world of course, a discrete audio indication of a lock key press would be built into the keyboard as an opt-in/out option - IBM should have thought of it - so we'll blame them

I'm happy to stick with Toggler - functionally it does what I want -- no more, no less. As a result of this exercise I've played around with its settings to good effect, I'd been running at defaults. One of the settings it has is to set a delay on the CapsLock toggle; so to toggle it, one has to hold it down for a bit (the 'bit' is configurable), sadly there's not something similar for NumLock.

Thanks for you help, it's been very useful.

    Take care - pjd

It's odd that caps lock would produce a sound and not num lock since this is a global setting for all toggle keys.

Since the Windows 10 Pro Creators Update 1709 last year, I haven't been able to get my Num Lock and Caps Lock beeps to work using any of the normal methods. Also, I've noticed that when dialogue box warnings pop up, like when closing a document before saving, those warning sounds stopped working too.

The only half-solution I've found was reinstalling the Realtek audio drivers for my Intel DP55KG motherboard. After rebooting, the beeps work again, but only temporarily. Within hours or a day, the sounds stop working. I've noted that MS has a nasty tendency of replacing the Realtek drivers with their latest MS audio drivers, which is where I believe the beeps stop working.

Anyone have any idea how to get around this?

I have just followed the directions, and the toggle keys now give a high pitched tone when turning on, and a lower tone when turning off. This was using the settings method. Only the caps, and num-lock keys seem to do this.
Thanks, Brink, I will see if I can get used to it.

I have just had a look at the page where the toggle key switch is, and at the bottom, there is:

    "Make it easier to type"

"Show a warning message when turning on Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys or Filter Keys from the keyboard"

This is enabled, but no screen warning shows.
